As the world scrambles to scale its infrastructure to match the unfathomably rapid evolution (1) of artificial intelligence, even the top names in the tech sector are grappling with ballooning costs for one key component of the devices we rely on for daily living: RAM.
We are now in the midst of what is being called a "RAMageddon" (2) — a foreboding term for the precipice that makers of consumer technology now find themselves on.

Summary
Apple is preparing to raise prices across its product line, including the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, due to soaring silicon costs. CEO Tim Cook stated that the company can no longer absorb the "unsustainable" increases driven by global demand for AI server memory and storage. Apple may continue to eliminate lower-tier storage options, effectively increasing the base price, as seen with the Mac Mini. The need to support new Apple Intelligence features further necessitates significant silicon investment, making price hikes unavoidable.

Apple Reportedly Cornering Mobile DRAM Supply To Outpace Industry ...
Appleis reportedly employing an aggressive procurement strategy to secure a dominant position in the global mobile DRAM market. By leveraging its vast financial reserves, the Cupertino-based tech giant is allegedly purchasing all available memory chip supply at premium prices. This move appears aimed at stabilizing its own production while simultaneously limiting the resources available to its primary competitors during a period of significant supply constraints.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuorecently suggested that Apple could expand its market share by absorbing high component costs, even if it results in narrower profit margins. This strategy seems to be in full effect following the launchof the MacBook Neo at a competitive $599 price point. This aggressive pricing positions Apple to capture a significant portion of the mid-range laptop market, which represents an estimated $30 billion opportunity with an annual volume of 50 million units.

Apple is raising its prices to offset the high cost of memory and storage, CEO
Tim Cook
told
The
Wall Street Journal
. Apple is no longer able to absorb the increased prices and will need to pass some of the cost on to consumers.
"Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable," said Cook. "We're doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we've been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable."
Cook did not say which products will get price increases or how much pricing will go up. The
iPhone 18 Pro
and iPhone 18 Pro Max coming in September could be more expensive than the
iPhone 17 Pro
and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Prices on iPads and Macs could go up in the near future.
Apple already raised the price of the
Mac mini
from $599 to $799 by eliminating its lowest-tier model. Apple has also eliminated several higher-tier Mac mini and
Mac Studio
options.

Apple likely will struggle to acquire a critical component for all its products this year. In fact, the whole electronics industry will face the same problem, and the competition will drive up prices, according to analysts.
What’s the missing product? RAM. Why is it so hard to get? AI. But the full story is more complex than those two basic facts.
The AI revolution disrupts everything
In recent years, artificial intelligence surged from a niche research pursuit into a defining force reshaping the global economy. Tech giants and startups alike race to embed AI into everyday tools, while governments and businesses invest billions to gain a strategic advantage.
Behind the scenes, large numbers of servers are required to run the AIs. Those computers need far more RAM and storage than consumer-grade computers. So companies like OpenAI, Microsoft and Google, which are building huge data centers, are buying tons of RAM and enterprise-grade SSDs.
They are using up much of the capacity to produce these vital compo…

SAN FRANCISCO, California: Apple has raised prices for several iPad and MacBook models, citing a sharp rise in memory and storage chip costs as artificial intelligence companies consume more of the global supply for data centers.
The increases, announced on June 25, do not affect the iPhone, Apple's biggest source of revenue. But they raised the starting price of the MacBook Neo, its lowest-priced laptop, to US$699 from $599 only months after its launch.
The move highlights how even Apple, with some of the industry's strongest supplier relationships, is being affected by a memory shortage that has also clouded the outlook for global smartphone and PC sales.
"We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly," Apple said in a statement. "We have shielded our customers from these increases so far, but we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on several products, including today's increases for iPad and Mac."
Apple raised the price of the MacBook Air with 512 gigabytes of storage to $1,299 from $1,099. The MacBook Pro with 1 terabyte of storage now costs $1,999, up from $1,699.

Tim Cook recently said price increases were "unavoidable" and described the company's pricing as "unsustainable." The 16-inch MacBook Pro saw its price go up by $300. Apple has confirmed that its products will see price increases in the future due to ongoing memory supply constraints. Apple CEO Tim Cook delivered the bad news in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.
Cook cited theongoing RAM supply shortageas reason for “unavoidable” price increases. Fromthe WSJ story published today:
“Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable,” he said. “We’re doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.”
Cook declined to offer details on the timing or scale of the planned price increases, nor which products will be affected. Apple’s next major product launch is likely to be in September when it releases the iPhone 18 lineup, expected to include a new foldable iPhone.
Price increases, especially for Macs and iPads, could come sooner. Apple raised the starting price of the Mac Mini last month in between launch events.
