G7 leaders on Wednesday welcomed the preliminary peace deal between the United States and Iran - which Trump signed on the eve of the summit - and said they are ready to contribute to its implementation. They added they will make efforts to diversify energy supply routes to reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz and increase energy stocks. For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.The G7 leader so said that they stand united to support Ukraine, including its territorial integrity, and agreed to increase sanctions on Russia, in a statement that underscores Kyiv’s growing leverage as it seeks peace talks with Moscow. The unity of the joint statement from the June 15-17 G7 summit in the French lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains was notable as US President Donald Trump’s administration has at times been hard to bring on board, particularly on the thorny issue of how to end the Ukraine war.It followed what Trump called a “very good” meeting with

(TNND) —The war between the United States and Iran overshadowed discussions on Ukraine Tuesday at theGroup of Seven summitin France, as President Donald Trump devoted significant attention on day two to a newly announced ceasefire agreement and lingering tensions across the Middle East.
While European leaders sought to refocus attention onRussia's war in Ukraine, Trump remained largely focused on the aftermath of the three-and-a-half-month conflict with Iran. But according to the Associated Press, Trump told fellow leaders he expected Iran would soon be "back in the rearview mirror" and that he wanted to turn more attention to Ukraine.
Trump announced over the weekend that aU.S.-brokered peace deal with Iranwas "complete" and that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transit routes, had reopened to international shipping. Vice President JD Vance later confirmed a preliminary agreement had been signed and said the text would be released…

The Group of 7 summit in France was intended to focus fresh attention on the war in Ukraine, which has largely fallen off President Trump’s radar since the start of the war with Iran.
On Tuesday, President Trump dashed those hopes, making it clear at the summit that the Ukraine conflict, which he once said he could end in 24 hours, was no longer high on his priority list.
“Look, we have nothing to do with it,” Mr. Trump said of the war.
“It has no impact on us, other than we sell weapons” to Ukraine, he added. “We’re thousands of miles away.”
Mr. Trump’s remarks underscored a new security reality for U.S. allies in Europe, who for eight decades relied on American protection until the Trump administration made it clear that they should do more to defend themselves.
Mr. Trump said he had met with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, at the summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, where the two leaders also participated in a discussion with other world leaders about the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Trump described the meeting with Mr. Zelensky as “very good” and said he would meet with him again l…

G7 leaders agreed Tuesday to intensify pressure on Russia to end its war against Ukraine, with U.S. President Donald Trump saying that Moscow should "make a deal."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined the world leaders at the summit in the French resort of Evian-les-Bains. The meeting brought Zelensky face-to-face with Trump, who has sought to reach out to Russian President Vladimir Putin but has also shown recent signs of losing patience with Moscow.
"Leaders decided today to increase the pressure on Russia through sanctions on gas and oil," a French diplomatic source told AFP after the talks, adding that the leaders agreed there "is a dynamic on the ground that benefits Ukraine."
The war has now lasted longer than World War I, and while Ukraine is seen as holding up well on the battlefield, its cities remain the target of deadly Russian strikes.
French President Emmanuel Macron invited Zelensky to stay until the conclusion of the three-day summit on Wednesday to continue meeting with T…

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — G7 leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump have backed a joint declaration promising to boost military support to Ukraine and to strengthen sanctions against Russia.
"We, the Leaders of the G7, stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity," they said in
a declaration published on Wednesday
shortly after midnight.
G7 leaders "commit to increase the pressure on the Russian war economy" and to "strengthen our sanctions, including those on the oil and gas sectors," they said.

The declaration name-checks Trump three times, saying that with the U.S. and Iran having reached an agreement to end hostilities, it is now easier to take more economic measures against Russia.
"We consider this the right moment to proceed with additional measures, as President Trump has delivered a deal that we support in reopening the Strait of Hormuz," the declaration reads.
The leaders, who are meeting in Evian-les-Bains for a three-day G7 summit, also committed to "increase the delivery of air defence capacities, additi…

US President Donald Trump said Russia should make peace with Ukraine after a "very good" meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, in comments that sparked cautious optimism among G7 leaders that a peace deal could be struck.
The upbeat mood over the Ukraine war, now in its fifth year, stands in stark contrast to Mr Zelensky's meeting with Mr Trump in the Oval Office last year, when he was told he had no leverage in potential peace talks with Russia.
Mr Zelensky and his European allies came to this week's G7 summit in the French lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains hoping to impress upon Mr Trump that Ukraine's battlefield fortunes had improved thanks to its drone incursions deep into Russia.
Mr Trump, who arrived at the summit brandishing a preliminary deal to end his war with Iran, said he would do what he could do to end the conflict in Ukraine, but there were few details of any concrete steps to raise the pressure on Moscow.
"Look, Russia should make a deal," Mr Trump told reporters, adding that too many young men were dying on the battlefield on both sides.

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have pledged their "unwavering support" for Ukraine and agreed to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions and weapons supplies to Kyiv amid signs Washington is turning its focus back toward ending Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II.
The G7 said in a statement on June 17, the second day of a two-day summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, that with Ukraine's recent progress on the battlefield "there is now a new momentum" in the war, now in its fifth year.
"We commend Ukraine for its resilience and progress on the battlefield in recent months and emphasize there is now a new momentum," thestatementsaid.
"To support and accelerate this new momentum, we agree to increase the delivery of air defense capacities, additional systems and interceptors, and long-range capabilities," it added.
Ahead of the summit, US officials reiterated that ending the war remains one of President Donald Trump's highest foreign policy priorities.

The G7 has nudged open a window for diplomacy in Ukraine
A YEAR AGO Donald Trump quit the G7 summit in Canada on the first evening. So it was a sign of progress that this time, over three days in the French lakeside town of Evian-les-Bains, Mr Trump stayed until the summit’s end. It helped that Emmanuel Macron, this year’s host, laid on a dinner for him at the Palace of Versailles (“not gold leaf [but] the real deal!” gushed Mr Trump). Wary Europeans have learned the hard way not to take Mr Trump at his word. Nevertheless, the summit ended with a mood of cautious optimism that America might possibly be persuaded to renew some support for Ukraine.
Mr Trump went to Evian at a time of acrimony and transatlantic distrust. He left calling the trip a “Great Success”. The leaders of the seven member countries—America, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan—described hisdeal with Iranas a “breakthrough”. Mr Trump inked it, unexpectedly early, during the dinner in Versailles on June 17th. A maritime coalition led by Britain and France, said Mr Macron, was ready to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump held a "very good meeting" with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at the G7 summit in France, he told journalists on June 16, adding that "Russia should make a deal" while hinting that Europe's largest conflict since World War II might be moving up his priority list.
US efforts to broker peace in the conflict that has raged since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have largely stalled in recent months, particularly since US and Israeli air strikes began the war with Iran on February 28.
But Trump suggested this may change now that aframework agreement with Iranhas been announced.
Asked if he would now have "a special focus" on Ukraine, Trump responded: "We were focused on Iran. That's going to be in the back, in the rear-view mirror…. I want to do whatever I can."
Trump also said he would meet with Zelenskyy again later on June 16 and that the Iran deal meant Washington was now in a position to reimpose sanctions on Russian oil.

ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — President Donald Trump signaled Tuesday that the war in Ukraine was not a priority for the United States, telling reporters at the Group of 7 summit in France that his country had “nothing to do” with a war that was “thousands of miles away.”
Trump’s remarks highlighted persistent divisions with G7 allies even after the announcement of a preliminary deal with Iran had eased some of the tension heading into the summit in Évian-les-Bains. European leaders have hoped to rekindle his interest in engaging with Russia on a settlement to end the war, and his comments were a reminder that Europe has increasingly had to fend for itself, more than four years after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“It has no impact on us, other than we sell weapons,” Trump said of the war after a closed-door discussion about the fighting.
The summit gathering the leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and the United States had begun on a lighter note, with smiles and jokes in front of the cameras. Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany handed Trump a German soccer jersey with the number 47, c…

Emmanuel Macron welcomed the Ukrainian president to the summit
The G7 group of leading world powers agreed to up the pressure on Russia to end its war against Ukraine through more energy sanctions, a French diplomatic source has said.
"Leaders decided today to increase the pressure on Russia through sanctions on gas and oil," the source said after a meeting at the G7 summit in the French spa town of Evian-les-Bains.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that Russia should make a peace deal with Ukraine, adding that he would do what he could to end the war after a "very good" meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and G7 leaders.
"I'm gonna do whatever I can," Mr Trump said.
Mr Zelensky and European diplomats hope to impress upon Mr Trump that Ukraine's fortunes have improved as Kyiv pushes for more support to strengthen its hand in eventual peace talks with Moscow.
"The key focus is to strengthen air defence for Ukraine and advance diplomacy, to make Russia end its war," Mr Zelensky posted on X after the meeting. "Peace is needed."

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — U.S. allies at the Group of Seven summit of major industrialized nations worked Tuesday to push the
war in Ukraine
back up the agenda of President Donald Trump after more than four years of fighting sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The Iran conflict
has in recent weeks overshadowed the war in Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin launched. Host President Emmanuel Macron of France said he’ll seek to persuade Trump to continue supporting Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia to help reach a peace agreement.

"This is a real change compared to the last few months, not just on the part of the Europeans, but on the part of the G7 members and all those who support Ukraine," Macron said at the press conference concluding the G7 summit.

Vice President JD Vance later confirmed a preliminary agreement had been signed and said the text would be released this week.
