Giorgia Meloni’s April visit to the White House was, by all accounts, a success. She soothed President Donald Trump with dulcet talk of “Western nationalism,” eased through a potentially awkward moment regarding Ukraine, and invited Trump to visit Rome—extracting a promise that he would come in the “near future.”
Yet despite the apparently seamless choreography, she and her team offered some after-action advice to fellow world leaders hoping for similarly controversy-free exchanges with Trump: Prepare for the unexpected. Specifically, she had been caught off guard when, before a supposedly private lunch in the Cabinet Room, journalists had been escorted in for seven minutes of questions; she found herself awkwardly positioned with her back to the cameras—much of the footage of Meloni captures the silky blond strands atop her head—and she was forced to either ignore the media in order to address Trump directly or twist herself to the left, away from the president, to try to speak with the reporters.
Exactly a week later, when Jonas Gahr Støre, the prime minister of Norway, arr…

European leaders focused on the end of the US-led international order on Friday at a combative
Munich Security Conference
– one of the few points of agreement between Washington and its NATO allies.
German leader Friedrich Merz said the post-1945 settlement “no longer exists” in his opening remarks, but warned leaders of the United States it has reached the limits of its power when acting alone, with its global leadership slipping away.
He also disclosed that he had begun talks with France about a European nuclear deterrent, while French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe “has to become a geopolitical power” in the face of Russian aggression.
Merz’s speech at the gathering in southern Germany, which brings together officials from across the world to discuss international security and hold diplomatic talks, highlighted the growing divide betwee…

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, FRANCE:
When Donald Trump, flanked by the French president, signed the Iran memorandum in the opulent Palace of Versailles, the optics were vintage Emmanuel Macron: the full weight of French history, glamour and pomp deployed to win over a difficult counterpart.
The invitation to a grand dinner at the gilded residence of Louis XIV had been designed to persuade Trump to stay till the end of a three-day G7 summit - rather than leave early as he did in Canada last year — and to encourage the mercurial U.S. president to adopt a more conciliatory position towards fellow leaders whom he has often chided over trade and Ukraine.

GENEVA
The French president on Thursday said Europe makes itself respected when its reacts in a united manner, welcoming what he described as a de-escalation of transatlantic tensions ahead of an informal meeting of European Council members.
EU leaders met in Brussels to address developments with Washington, following tensions over US President Donald Trump's interest in Greenland due to its strategic Arctic position, abundant mineral resources and growing concerns about Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty over the island.
After a meeting with NATO chief Rutte on Wednesday, Trump said framework for a future deal on Greenland was reached, and also backed off threats to tariff European allies that had opposed his plans to acquire the island.
Speaking to reporters, Emmanuel Macron said the meeting was intended to demonstrate European unity in support of Denmark’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, arguing that a collective response had helped restore calm.

Macron's Versailles charm offensive secures Trump boost for G7
Macron's Versailles charm offensive secures Trump boost for G7
A
joke circulated ahead of the
G7
summit in
France
that it was the biggest ever meeting that should have been an email. It dashed those low expectations, partly due to the energetic diplomacy and willingness to flatter
Donald Trump
of French president
Emmanuel Macron
.
There have been questions for years over the G7’s relevance, as their collective share of the global economy shrinks, and with the US retreating from multilateralism, these grew louder.
But France founded the G7 and as the host this year, Macron was keen to leave a legacy preserving it behind him: it’s his last G7 before a French presidential election in which he cannot run.
To ensure Trump’s attendance, Macron moved the summit so it wouldn’t clash
with his 80th birthday party
and pulled out the cultural heavy artillery, inviting the US president to a dinner afterwards at the Palace of Versailles.

PARIS (AP) — Donald Trump explained the appeal in one sentence: “Versailles is not gold leaf — Versailles is the real deal.”
For Emmanuel Macron, that was precisely the point.

On Wednesday night, the French president throws open Louis XIV’s palace to his U.S. counterpart for a private reception, show and dinner marking America’s 250th birthday. At a turbulent moment for the trans-Atlantic alliance, it could help Macron keep a personal channel open as the two navigate differences over Iran, Ukraine and tariffs.
It has already kept Trump from leaving a Group of Seven summit early, as he did last year in Canada.
“I’m a fan of beautiful places,” he told reporters, saying he had planned to leave earlier until “a very nice man” invited him to dinner.

Trump and Macron share awkward long handshake after White House snub
Donald Trump
and
Emmanuel Macron
shared an awkward handshake after the US president snubbed his French counterpart by not greeting him at the
White House
upon his arrival on Monday, 24 February.
The pair are meeting to discuss ending
Russia

Ukraine
and
the future of U.S. relations with Europe.
They joined a call with other G7 leaders for talks on the invasion, which reached its
third anniversary on Monday.
It comes after Mr Trump accused Britain and France of having “done nothing” to end the war in
Ukraine
and falsely accused Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky of being a “dictator.”

France and Germany on Wednesday affirmed their will to work together to secure digital independence, as Europe's largest tech trade fair Vivatech got underway and transatlantic tensions over AI marked the G7 meeting.
French President Emmanuel Macron called for "better regulation" of AI and warned against "non-cooperation between democracies" on the technology, as increasingly capable AI models are released by private developers.
"The American administration made a very serious decision a few days ago. The good thing is, that means a wake-up call: 'this can be dangerous'," Macron said in Evian, eastern France, where US President Donald Trump was meeting leaders of other top advanced economies.
But he also warned that the "reaction had in a way been strictly nationalist".

Macron and Trump affirm shared interest in 'lasting' peace in Ukraine
Despite significant differences, Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron on Monday affirmed their commitment to work together to end the war in Ukraine, three years to the day after the Russian invasion began.
The French president was welcomed by his American counterpart in the Oval Office and promised discussions towards a "lasting" peace and hoped for strong American involvement in this pursuit. Donald Trump praised his "special" relationship with Macron and expressed confidence in ending hostilities within "a few weeks."
Trump also said that an agreement with Ukraine on American access to the country's minerals was "very close" and even suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could come to the White House to ratify it, "this week or next."
The US President claimed Putin would agree to the future deployment of European troops in Ukraine but was vague about the security guarantees Washington might provide for these soldiers. Macron said that "Europeans are ready to go as far as sending troops" to ensure "peace is respected".
The two leaders exchanged a few jokes and pleasantries in a rather relaxed …

Macron's Versailles diplomacy wins mixed results over decade in power ...
Audio By Carbonatix
By Michel Rose
EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France, June 18 (Reuters) – When Donald Trump, flanked by the French president, signed the Iran memorandum in the opulent Palace of Versailles, the optics were vintage Emmanuel Macron: the full weight of French history, glamour and pomp deployed to win over a difficult counterpart.
The invitation to a grand dinner at the gilded residence of Louis XIV had been designed to persuade Trump to stay till the end of a three-day G7 summit – rather than leave early as he did in Canada last year — and to encourage the mercurial U.S. president to adopt a more conciliatory position towards fellow leaders whom he has often chided over trade and Ukraine.
French diplomats cheered a G7 they described as “a clean sweep”, with Trump joining the other leaders in acknowledging Ukraine’s improved battlefield fortunes with a unified pledge of support and fresh sanctions on Russia.
The weeks ahead will be a test of the durability of the impressions made on Trump — known for his frequently shifting positions on geopolitical matters — by the lakeside summit in eastern France …

French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have both had issues with President Donald Trump in the past. At the G7 in France on Tuesday, the two spoke about dealing with the U.S. president and were caught on a hot mic talking about it.
According to the Daily Mail
, the discussion went like this:
The two appeared to be discussing whether
Zelensky
would meet with President
Donald Trump
, among other things.
After the leaders exchanged greetings, Macron asked Zelensky how long he would be in
France
for the G7 conference.
Zelensky appeared to say that he would only be able to stay one more full day, as he had to travel to Brussels on the 18th.
Then Macron asked if Zelensky had a ‘bilateral’ [unintelligible] organized.
‘With President Trump?’ Zelensky answered.
Tantalizingly, the chiefs of state spoke quietly for over twenty seconds before Macron rejoined more audibly, ‘Okay, we’ll arrange that.’
The two may have been trying to avoid being overheard.
Trump and Zelenskyy did indeed meet at the summit…

Macron speaks to Trump and Zelensky after heated White House meeting
Published March 02, 2025
PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron has called for calm and respect after a heated clash between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, warning that Europe can no longer rely on the United States for its security.
Macron called for "calm" between the two leaders in interviews with French media but also for a dialogue on a possible European nuclear "shield", as the continent could no longer rely on the United States.
In the interviews, he said everyone should "return to calm, respect... so we can move forward... because what is at stake is too important".
Friday’s row, which saw Zelensky ordered out of the White House, has raised fears in Europe over the US commitment to Ukraine’s struggle against Russia’s invasion.
Macron said any US "disengagement" in Ukraine was "not in its interests", as forcing Kyiv to "sign a ceasefire without security guarantees" would mean "its capacity to deter Russia, China and others would evaporate the same day".
On whether he would speak with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, as he did in the early days…

US-Iran war: Trump jokes about Emmanuel Macron's marriage to wife ...
London:US President Donald Trump has sparked a furore by mocking French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte during a speech about the war with Iran, adding a new personal barb to hisdeepening dispute with European allies.
Trump joked that Brigitte Macron treated her husband “extremely badly” and the French leader was still recovering from a “right to the jaw” from his wife, drawing laughs from the audience at a White House lunch.
The remarks infuriated French politicians including Macron’s biggest rivals, with left-wing leader Manuel Bompard declaring it was “absolutely unacceptable” for Trump to speak of Brigitte Macron in this way.
Macron scorned the remarks as “neither elegant nor up to standard” and said they did not deserve a reply, before launching into a critique of the US president for going to war without NATO allies and later asking them to come to his aid.
While apparently petty, Trump’s remarks add to tensions between the US and its allies over the Middle East when European leaders are refusing to join the war and some are suggesting that American policy is a victory for Russian Pre…

WASHINGTON —
President Trump welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House for talks Monday at a moment of deep uncertainty about the future of transatlantic relations, with Trump transforming American foreign policy and effectively tuning out European leadership as he looks to quickly end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The two leaders started their day by participating in a more than two-hour virtual meeting with fellow leaders of the Group of 7 economies to discuss the war.
Trump also has made demands for territory — Greenland, Canada, Gaza and the Panama Canal — as well as precious rare earth minerals from Ukraine. Just over a month into his second term, the “America First” president has cast an enormous shadow over what veteran U.S. diplomats and former government officials had regarded as America’s…

The President's News Conference With President Emmanuel Macron ...
AboutSearch
President Trump.Well, thank you very much, everyone. Great honor to be here with my friend.
I'm delighted to welcome President Macron back to the White House. We've been together quite often, but not that often in the White House. We honored the President, First Lady of France not so long ago. That was a beautiful evening, and we will not soon forget it. That was a beautiful day and evening and many fond memories.
I also want to thank Emmanuel for hosting me in Paris last December after a historic election win to witness the reopening of the spectacular Notre Dame Cathedral, where you did an outstanding job in bringing it back together. That was a sad day, watching that burn. And 5 years later, you had it up, and it was, they say, more beautiful than it was before. So I think that's a great achievement. That was not easy.
France is America's oldest ally. Our cherished partnership has been a force for freedom, prosperity, and peace from the very beginning. We're now working on some very interesting developments—one, in particular, as you know, the war between Russia and Ukraine.
In the American Revo…
