Why PMLA court accuses Punjab minister Sanjeev Arora's family, others ... A special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has rejected the bail application of Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora in a case related to bogus exports of mobile phones on Monday. While dismissing the application, the Special Judge Narender Sura reasoned that there were efforts to tamper with evidence. During the proceedings, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged that, if released on bail, Arora would make every effort to tamper with the evidence. Citing an incident, it was submitted that one of the persons whose statement was recorded by ED under Section 50 of the PMLA was taken to the office of an advocate for preparing an application to retract from his statement, and even the counsel fee to the tune of Rs 35,000 was transferred to him through GPay by two persons related to Arora. However, due to legal advice taken from other counsel, the application was not moved before this court, added ED. The Investigating Officer (IO) showed the record regarding the payment of Rs 35,000, in the form of screenshots, to the court. The court also perused the case diary maintained by the I…

SC grants bail to SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia in disproportionate ... The Supreme Court of India on Monday granted bail to SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta passed the order while hearing Majithia’s plea challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision refusing him bail. The apex court took note of the fact that Majithia had been in custody in the case for the last seven months. In its order dated 4 December last year, the High Court had dismissed Majithia’s bail application, observing that the possibility of him influencing the investigation could not be ruled out. While doing so, it had directed the Punjab Vigilance Bureau to complete its probe within three months, after which Majithia could seek bail. The Vigilance Bureau had arrested Majithia on 25 June last year in connection with the disproportionate assets case, which allegedly involves the accumulation of assets worth around Rs 540 crore. The FIR against Majithia stems from an ongoing investigation being conducted by a Punjab Police special investigation team in a 2021 drugs case. During the hearing…

Gurugram court dismisses Punjab minister Sanjeev Arora's bail plea A special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Gurugram on Monday dismissed the bail application of Punjab minister Sanjeev Arora. The detailed order is yet to be made public. Arora is currently lodged in jail in connection with a money-laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Arora was the Chairman and Managing Director of M/s HSRL, when the alleged bogus mobile phone exports were made. During a remand hearing before a Special Court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Gurugram on May 16, the ED alleged that Arora denied knowledge of the entities to which the mobile phones were exported and claimed that the mobile division of M/s HSRL was controlled and manag…
