According toDeccan Herald, the Supreme Court bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Sheel Nagu issued notice to the Rajasthan government on 30 June 2026. The court clarified that bail would not be granted at this stage and would only be considered if there is a grave necessity, such as a life-threatening medical condition. High Court upholds Sonam's bail, State likely to move SC
High Court upholds Sonam's bail, State likely to move SC Shillong, Jun 29: The Meghalaya High Court today dismissed an appeal by the state government and upheld the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime suspect in the May 2025 honeymoon murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi. A lower court had granted Sonam bail in April but the state appealed. While the High Court has reserved its verdict until June 10, it was reported that the single judge bench of Justice Wanlura Diengdoh did not find sufficient merit in the government’s case. Sonam was granted bail on the grounds that she was not accurately told the reasons for her arrest by police, which thus caused prejudice to her defence. In a significant slip-up, the police had erroneously referred to Section 403(1) BNS instead of Section 103(1). The latter is the correct section for punishment for murder. The police had not just made this mistake once but several times, including in the checklist for justification of arrest, memo of arrest, inspection memo, intimation of rights of the arrested person and case diary extract. Challenging the lower court, state Advocate General Amit Kumar had submitted that there was not a single…

Supreme Court acquits man in 2005 murder case, Cites flawed evidence ... New Delhi:The Supreme Court has delivered a significant order acquitting Virendra Kumar Chamar, accused no. 3 in a murder case, and setting aside his conviction under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. A bench comprising Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih passed the order, citing weak prosecution evidence and doubts about the eyewitness testimony. The case involved the murder of one Harilal on June 20, 2005. The prosecution alleged that three accused, including the appellant, attacked the deceased with firearms and a knife. The appellant’s conviction was primarily based on the testimony of PW1, Ram Sumer, the brother of the deceased, who claimed to be an eyewitness. The court noted several inconsistencies in PW1’s testimony. Justice Oka observed,“We are surprised to note that the courts have convicted the appellant solely based on the evidence of PW1—Ram Sumer. He has already undergone incarceration for sixteen years. This is a shocking state of affairs.” Expressing concern over the conviction based solely on PW1’s testimony, the court stated,“Therefore, we are of the considered view that …

A single-judge bench of Justice W Diengdoh dismissed the criminal petition filed by the state government, seeking cancellation of the bail granted by the trial court on April 27. 'Quiet. Devastating. Irrefutable': Court cited 'victim's voice' to end Asaram's ... Over the past two years, self-styled godmanAsaram Bapu, convicted forrape in two cases, has cited his deteriorating health to obtain court relief at least 15 times through medical treatment permissions, emergency paroles, and interim bail. On May 27, that run was halted. The Rajasthan High Court upheld his life sentence in a minor’s rape case, cancelled his bail, and directed him to surrender, observing that his frail health “cannot justify ignoring the victim’s voice. Quiet. Devastating. Irrefutable”. Strong words, not without reason. When Asaram surrendered on May 28, he had been out on interim bail for seven months. Before that stretch, he had spent long periods in various hospitals since March 2024. Taken together, records show, Asaram received court-sanctioned medical relief more than a dozen times between March 21, 2024, and May 25, 2026. Medical plea In January 2024, going into Asaram’s medical history before declining his fourth Suspension of Sentence application for bail, the Rajasthan High Court said that while ordinarily, a convict who has undergone a sentence of 10 years or more can…

No bail for 12 accused in 2008 Bengaluru blasts case BENGALURU: Considering arguments of the prosecution that the accused had committed a heinous offence involving national security and integrity, the Special Court for NIA cases declined to grant bail to the 12 accused involved in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blast. Judge Gangadhara CM rejected the bail applications filed by Edapana Thodika Sharafuddeen, Abdul Jabbar, V P Mahammad Sakariya, Badrudheen N, Faizal, Umar Farooq, Ibrahim Molvi, Sameer, Sarfuddin, Thajuddin, Abdul Khadar and P B Saabeer, all from Kerala. A woman, Sudha, had died and nine were injured in the blast on July 25, 2008, which led to registration of the crime against T Naseer and others. The court noted that the accused had made several attempts to get bail but their applications were rejected as there is a prima facie case against them. If their applications are considered now, it amounts to reviewing orders passed by the court earlier. Sonam Raghuvanshi was granted bail by a Meghalaya court on the basis that the ‘grounds of arrest’ were not provided to her when she was detained. The prosecution contends that these grounds were indeed communicated to her. According to the Meghalaya government, the only issue pertains to a typographical error in the document; it cited Section 403 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a non-existent provision, instead of Section 103 (1) of the BNS, which outlines the pun…
