Uganda’s military chief, who is also the president’s son, said on Sunday he had ordered the closure of two leading media outlets, declaring that he did “not believe in a free press.”
Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the Daily Monitor – Uganda’s largest independent daily newspaper – and NTV Uganda, one of the country’s largest private broadcasters, would “not re-open without my permission.”
“In Uganda, I do not believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution,” Kainerugaba wrote in a series of posts on the X platform.
He did not give specific reasons for closing the media outlets, both of which are owned by Nation Media Group (NMG) NMG.NR, a media conglomerate headquartered in Kenya and listed on the Nairobi stock exchange.
The Daily Monitor reported on Sunday that military personnel had been deployed at NMG’s premises in the capital, Kampala, and that staff were bei…

Uganda's Army Chief Shuts Down Independent Media
Soldiers surrounded Uganda’s largest independent newsroom before dawn on Sunday, cutting power to its studios and sealing every exit. By morning, the man who ordered it, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, had moved from shutting down television stations to hunting an executive by name.
Soldiers Surround The Newsroom Overnight
Security personnel deployed shortly after midnight at the Nation Media Group Uganda offices in Namuwongo and at the Kampala Serena Hotel, where the broadcaster’s studios sit. Staff who tried to report for work found the gates blocked. By 5am, NTV Uganda and Spark TV had gone dark, replaced by a blank screen reading video unavailable. Dembe FM and KFM briefly dropped off air too. The Daily Monitor newspaper’s headquarters remained under armed guard through the morning, soldiers stationed at every entrance.
The siege followed hours of warnings posted directly by Kainerugaba on X. “NTV and Moniter are being shut down from today!” he wrote shortly after 1am, misspelling the paper’s name. He followed with a second post making the terms plain: “Both NTV and Moniter will not re-open without my permission…

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — The offices of a major news organization in Uganda were shut down on the orders of the military chief, who warned Sunday that all media “will follow the rules" while asserting his authority as the East African country's de facto ruler.
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the eldest son of President Yoweri Museveni, has served as the top military commander since 2024. In recent days, after Museveni was sworn in for a seventh consecutive term, Kainerugaba has strengthened his grip with a series of directives and orders usually reserved for the head of state.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s chief of defence forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has ordered the closure of NTV Uganda, Spark TV and Daily Monitor.
The affected media outlets, owned by Nation Media Group (NMG), were forced to stop airing on Sunday after a crackdown by security forces.
According toDaily Monitor, the crackdown began shortly after midnight at the NMG premises, and that its staff reported that “no one was being allowed to enter or leave the compound”.
Though no reasons were given for the closure of the outlets, Daily Monitor said the crackdown comes amid a 2025 ban on NMG journalists from covering Museveni’s public events.
Since the past week, Kainerugaba has made several threats on X, the micro blogging platform, to shut down NTV and Daily Monitor, saying he was awaiting permission from his father.
In a post made in the wake to clampdown, Kainerugaba said he does not believe in a free press in Uganda, and that the press should be “guided by cadres of the revolution”.

NAIROBI, Jan 23 (Reuters) – Uganda’s military chief said on Friday that authorities had detained 2,000 opposition supporters, killed 30 and were hunting for more following a disputed presidential election in which his father Yoweri Museveni, won a seventh term.
Museveni, 81, who has led the East African nation for nearly four decades, was declared to have resoundingly defeated Bobi Wine, leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party in the January 15 vote, held during an internet blackout.
Wine, a former musician whose legal name is Robert Kyagulanyi, rejected the election result, alleging widespread irregularities including ballot stuffing, and went into hiding.
In a series of overnight social media posts, military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son, gave the first details of the arrests and killings of NUP supporters, describing them as hooligans and terrorists.
“So far we have killed 30 NUP terrorists,” Kainerugaba said on X, without explaining the circumstances of the deaths. “Most NUP terrorist leaders are in hiding. We shall get them all,” he said in another post.

KAMPALA, Uganda—In a small, dimly lit newsroom in the heart of Kampala, a team of journalists huddles around a computer, editing a story they hope will expose corruption within a government ministry. The air is tense; they know the risks. In Uganda, where press freedom is under constant threat, independent media outlets face mounting challenges—from legal harassment and intimidation to outright censorship.
Uganda’s independent media has long been a beacon of hope in a region where authoritarian regimes often dominate the narrative. But in recent years, journalists and media organizations have found themselves under siege, battling a government that views critical reporting as a threat to its authority.
A Shrinking Space for Free Press
The decline of press freedom in Uganda is not new, but it has accelerated in recent years. According to Reporters Without Borders, Uganda ranks 132nd out of 180 countries in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index, a drop from previous years. The government, led by President Yoweri Museveni since…

President Museveni on Saturday defended recent actions by Uganda’s security agencies and endorsed comments by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba that the country’s media should be more “disciplined,” saying the measures were necessary to protect democracy and public order.
In a nationally televised address, Museveni accused sections of the opposition of promoting violence, citing the 2020 riots, attacks on ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters and repeated threats to disrupt the country’s constitutional order.
“The fascist tendencies among some elements of the opposition have for a long period provoked the patriots,” Museveni said.
He referred to the 2020 unrest in which women wearing NRM colours were attacked and an unarmed policewoman assaulted, and criticised opposition slogans such as “Tugenda kwokya Kampala” (“We are going to burn Kampala”) and “Tajja Kulayira” (“He will not be sworn in”), which he said implied an intention to stop the inauguration of an elected president through violence rather than through the courts.
