WASHINGTON (TNND) —President Donald Trump made a Pearl Harbor joke during a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House on Thursday amid thewar with Iran.
A reporter asked Trump why he didn't warn Japan or other U.S. allies ahead of the initial attack in Iran on February 28. Trump said he and his administration didn't tell anyone about it because they wanted an element of surprise.
The meeting came as Trump continues to call on U.S. allies, including Japan, to assist in the Strait of Hormuz. He has said he wants them to help protect the critical global shipping route for oil and gas.
Takaichi said her visit comes at a crucial time.
Before leaving Japan, she said she expected her meeting with Trump to be "very difficult," denying that the Trump administration officially requested Japanese warships for the conflict. But she later told Trump that Japan is opposed to Iran's development of a nuclear program and appealed to his desire to be seen as a peacemaker.

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and U.S. President Donald Trump hold a summit meeting at the White House, Mar. 19, 2026.
On March 19, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae made her first official visit to the United States for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. She acknowledged that this summit would be “very difficult,” as the meeting was expected to be overshadowed by the war in Iran and her disagreements with Trump over theextent of Japanese involvementin the conflict.
Despite such circumstances, Takaichi can call the summit a success.
Before the summit, Trump had beenpressuringJapan to send its minesweepers to help oil and gas tankers safely navigate the Strait of Hormuz. Takaichirefused to do so,as Japan has no legal mechanism for sending armed forces to support an ongoing war it is not a part of.
On March 19,sitting next to Trump in the Oval Office, Takaichi’s strategy was to offer flattery, stating that it is “only you, Donald, who can achieve peace across the world.” She also offered promises to support U.S. efforts to stabilize energy markets and secure shipping through the Str…

One key thing aspiring comedians should remember is that timing is everything. President Donald Trump has dipped his fingers into several different ventures over the years, but being a world leader undoubtedly lands you in times and places where cracking a joke is less than appropriate. You could practically hear a pin drop in the Oval Office after one joke failed to land during his meeting on March 19 with the Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi.
Reporter: Why didn't you tell allies about the war before attacking Iran?
Trump: We wanted it to be a surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?

The meeting between the leaders was undoubtedly going to lead to some questions about Trump's war on Iran, as one reporter asked, "Japan and the U.S. are very good friends. But one question, why didn't you tell U.S. allies in Europe and Asia, like Japan, a…

Trump jokes about Pearl Harbor in meeting with Japanese PM
President Donald Trump on Thursday drew a parallel between U.S. strikes on Iran and Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor decades ago, as he defended the war against Tehran at a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Washington.
“We wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?” Trump said when a journalist asked why he had not told allies about his war plans.
“You believe in surprise, I think much more so than us.”
Takaichi’s eyes widened, and she shifted in her chair as Trump, seated beside her in the Oval Office, evoked the moment that drew the U.S. into the Second World War.
The Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941, killed 2,390 Americans, and the U.S. declared war on Japan the next day.
U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy.”
The U.S. defeated Japan in August 1945, days after U.S. atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.
