Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, strongly defended India's independent oil trade policy amidst US pressure and tariffs.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday (Sep 27) strongly backed India's stand on its oil trade policies, as New Delhi continues to push back against steep 50 per cent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Speaking on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, Lavrov said India was “perfectly capable” of making its own decisions on trade and energy, hailing his counterpart S Jaishankar and praising New Delhi’s “self-respect.” Lavrov insisted that the economic partnership between Russia and India was "not under threat" amid the US tariff row. "The Indian Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs have made it clear that India chooses its own partners," he said.
Even as the US continues to try to strong-arm India into stopping the purchase of discounted Russian oil — with Trump's White House trade advisor Peter Navarro lashing out at New Delhi at every turn — Lavrov said that the South Asian nat…

India and Russia are strengthening their economic partnership, with bilateral trade and investment reaching historic highs and both governments pushing to expand cooperation across energy, manufacturing, connectivity and technology.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India-Russia bilateral trade touched USD 68.7 billion in FY 2024-25, a nearly sixfold increase from pre-pandemic levels. India’s exports stood at USD 4.88 billion, while imports – dominated by crude oil, petroleum products, fertilizers and minerals – totaled USD 63.84 billion. Indian exports mainly included agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, machinery and engineering goods. Both countries aim to raise bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2030.

Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams are coming true
One hundred years ago, Mahatma Gandhi
dreamed that one day other countries would
learn fr om a free India. As we can now see, the
dreams of the Father of the Indian Nation are
coming true.
Last year, India celebrated the 75th anniversary
of its independence. Nowadays, India is not
only a great civilization with thousands of
years of history – it is also a sovereign nation
that will determine the future of Eurasia in the
21st century alongside China, Russia and other
centers of power.
From the first days of its independence, India
chose the path of non-alignment. Steering clear
of the military alliances of East and West, it has
pursued a policy based on its own strategic
interests. This rather pragmatic approach of
‘proactive neutrality’ has paid off well so far.
India is now often called the ‘voice of the Global
South’. Indeed, India can speak on behalf of
many developing nations as it has already made
a tremendous journey that many other countries
are still aspiring to. India no longer stays in the
shade of the former colonial powers, it rather
stands on par with them now, r…

Russian President Vladimir Putin has underlined the strength of India-Russia ties, describing the relationship as one built on trust, mutual respect and long-standing cooperation. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin said the partnership extends beyond traditional diplomacy and remains resilient despite changing global political circumstances.
Highlighting the depth of bilateral ties, Putin said, "We have had very good, trust-based, brotherly relations in all senses of the word. We know how talented the Indian people are, how well educated. Indians have great competencies, which have achieved world renown, especially in coding and in other fields...Prime Minister Modi had to introduce certain restrictions here, asking people not to use personal cars, not to travel long distances, due to what is happening in the Strait of Hormuz...I think our companies did the right thing and the Indian counterparts did the right thing when they decided to embark on this path of close cooperation, because right now we are trying to lend a helping hand and give our shoulder, increasin…

ST PETERSBURG: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday hailed Moscow's strategic partnership with New Delhi and asserted that Western attempts to force New Delhi into scaling back its cooperation with Russia are both futile and damaging to global stability.
In an interaction with heads of leading global news agencies includingPTI, Putin lauded India's economic growth and its independent foreign policy and said Russia is determined to expand its economic engagement with the country.
"India is among the world's major economies and is currently demonstrating an impressive rate of economic growth," Putin remarked, expressing confidence that bilateral trade between the two nations is on track to hit a USD 100 billion milestone in the coming years.
Putin said Russia has not seen any negative consequences of Western pressure on India to limit its engagement with Russia, suggesting that such tactics are bound to backfire.
"Everyone has understood that putting pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi (and India) that has the largest population in the world, is detrimental for international relations and for bilatera…

NEW DELHI:India andRussiaon Friday unveiled a range of measures to bolster their economic partnership, including a five-year plan to address growing imbalance in two-way trade, pacts on mobility and steps to ensure energy security, as Prime MinisterNarendra Modiimpressed on PresidentVladimir Putinthe need for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
Economic and commercial ties took centrestage at the India-Russia Summit, for which Putin made his first visit to India in four years, marking a shift in a long-standing partnership that has traditionally focused on defence and strategic relations. The development was in some ways a riposte to Western powers that have pushed India to reduce its economic ties with Russia as part of their efforts to end the Ukraine conflict.
Modi emphasised the importance of India-Russia ties at a media interaction after his talks with Putin. “Over the past eight decades, the world has witnessed many ups and downs… Yet, through all of this, the India-Russia friendship has remained steady like a guiding star. Built on mutual respect and deep trust, our relationship has stood …

Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed his country’s strategic partnership with India, adding that New Delhi’s cooperation with the United States did not harm India-Russia ties.
On Thursday, speaking to reporters at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, Putin called India a “great country” and a “reliable partner.”
“We are glad that India is developing its relations with all countries it thinks important for its national interests,” Putin told the media.
He said that the US was trying to put pressure on India over its relations with Russia, adding that it was “detrimental” to pressurize Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Everyone has understood that putting pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi (and India) that has the largest population in the world, is detrimental for international relations and for bilateral relations. It doesn’t matter where this pressure comes from,” the Russian leader said.
India and Russia share a relationship that spans decades and is deeply rooted in history and defense. Meanwhile, the US has been asking India to scale back its procurement of Russian crude oil.

As India reels under punitive U.S. tariffs over its purchases of Russian oil, New Delhi is all set to host President Vladmir Putin for a two-day visit, signaling its determination to deepen ties with Moscow.
The visit indicates that India wants to "maintain its relations with Russia, especially at a time when it sees the United States as unreliable and China as hostile," said Ian Bremmer, president and founder of political risk consultancy firm Eurasia Group.
Putin will be in India on Dec 4-5 for the 23rd India-Russia annual summit, with experts saying the two countries will extend their strategic and trade ties.
While this visit was planned before U.S.-India tiessoured,it signifies that "New Delhi is not beholden to the whims of the Trump administration and that it maintains an independent foreign policy," said Chietigj Bajpaee, senior research fellow for South Asia in the Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House.
Kremlin said last week that Putin's visit was of "great importance" with the Russian president and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to discuss the "scope of Russia-India special and privil…
