The Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanon's southern town of Naqoura is the second pullout since the November ceasefire agreement, analysts say. Israel is to withdraw from southern Lebanon over a 60-day period, while Lebanon's Shiite militia Hezbollah is to retreat some 30 kilometers north from the border with Israel and dismantle its military infrastructure in the south.
Filippo Dionigi, a specialist on Lebanon at Britain's University of Bristol, told VOA there have been violations by both sides in this fragile truce.
"There was a 60-days deadline for Israel to move out of Lebanese territory and for the Lebanese army to take over control of those areas that were previously occupied by Israel. This has not happened yet for the greatest majority of the villages," Dionigi said.
"There are 60 [villages] that are still occupied and only 3 of them have been actually evacuated by Israeli forces. On the other hand, Hezbollah has made several declarations that it reserves the right to act against Israel."
The ceasefire, brokered in part by U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, sees the Leban…

TEL AVIV, June 30 (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday visited Lebanese territory occupied by the Israeli military, telling soldiers that Israel would not withdraw from the country’s south as long as Iran-backed Hezbollah continued to pose a threat.
It was the first visit by Netanyahu to occupied Lebanese territory since the Israeli and Lebanese governments reached a security agreement last Friday mediated by the United States under which Israel will hand over two areas to Lebanon’s army.
“Our insistence is that we will not leave southern Lebanon until the threat is removed,” Netanyahu told troops, according to a statement released by his office, referring to Hezbollah.
“And as long as Hezbollah remains here, armed and threatening us, we will remain here as well,” he said.
Netanyahu, who last publicly visited occupied Lebanese territory in April, was joined by Defence Minister Israel Katz and senior military officials.

A confidential security annex within the latest agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon explicitly guarantees the Israeli army full freedom to operate against threats within its security zone in southern Lebanon. It also confirms that there will be no automatic withdrawal of Israeli forces. However, Jerusalem remains concerned that Tehran's pressure could undermine the deal, according to an official familiar with the agreement who spoke to the Times of Israel, corroborating an unverified report published by Israeli Channel 12.
The security annex, referenced in the published text of the agreement, was classified as secret at the request of the Lebanese government, according to the details provided.
Article Four of the annex stipulates that the Israeli army will maintain freedom of movement to counter immediate and emerging threats within the security zone. Israel regards this provision as essential amid fears that US-Iranian negotiations might restrict its ability to respond to threats against its forces posed by Hezbollah.
The agreement also includes an explicit commitment from both Israel and Leb…

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorists had “no business” being in Southern Lebanon after Jerusalem and Beirut mutually recognized each other last week.
Visiting Israel Defense Forces troops deployed in the security zone in Southern Lebanon, Netanyahu stated: “We say to both Iran and Hezbollah: Get out of here.”
The premier praised the troops for helping secure the agreement with Beirut, saying it would allow “two sovereign states” to restore “a reality of security and prosperity” along their shared border.
He said the Israel-Lebanon framework agreement signed on Friday was a “slap in the face” to the Iranian axis and warned it “won’t necessarily go unchallenged” by Tehran and its proxies.
“We are very proud of what we have achieved thanks to your brave action and also the decisions we have made,” Netanyahu continued. “Our insistence is that we will not leave Southern Lebanon until the threat is eliminated. As long as Hezbollah is armed and present here, posing a threat to us, we will remain here.”

Netanyahu says deal with Lebanon ‘historic’ for Israel
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday hailed the US-brokered agreement with Lebanon, calling it a historic achievement that dealt a blow to arch-foes Iran and Hezbollah.“Yesterday ... we achieved a historic deal for the state of Israel after direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon,” Netanyahu said in a televised briefing. “This is a blow to Iran and Hezbollah.”Netanyahu reiterated that Israeli forces would remain in the so-called security zone established by the military some 10 kilometers (six miles) inside the Lebanese territory.“We will remain in the area until Hezbollah and the rest of the terror groups are disarmed,” he said.“Both the United States and Lebanon have recognized Israel’s right to maintain a security zone inside Lebanon for as long as it remains necessary to safeguard our security.“We will continue to hold this security zone until Hezbollah and all other terrorist organizations are fully disarmed and no longer pose any threat to Israel from

Israel will withdraw from two areas in southern Lebanon, transferring the sites to the Lebanese military, under an initial agreement signed Friday after four days of talks in Washington.
The deal, which both sides framed as a first step, comes as Israel has been waging a sustained war against Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah. Israeli attacks on the group in Lebanon have complicated efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement between the United States and Iran.
The US-brokered negotiations led to a trilateral deal between Israel, Lebanon and the US that would enable “future agreement” on a broader peace deal, according to a senior Israeli official.
Lebanon’s Ambassador to the US, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, said the agreement would be the “first step on the road to restoring Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday visited Lebanese territory occupied by the Israeli military, telling soldiers that Israel would not withdraw from the country's south as long as Iran-backed Hezbollah continued to pose a threat.
It was the first visit by Netanyahu to occupied Lebanese territory since the Israeli and Lebanese governments reached a security agreement last Friday mediated by the United States under which Israel will hand over two areas to Lebanon's army.
"Our insistence is that we will not leave southern Lebanon until the threat is removed," Netanyahu told troops, according to a statement released by his office, referring to Hezbollah.
"And as long as Hezbollah remains here, armed and threatening us, we will remain here as well," he said.
