MT. SI, Wash. (KOMO) —Two teen hikers were injured during a bear encounter at Mount Si on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a response from the King County Sheriff’s Office, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and other agencies.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said a group of young people was hiking on a Mount Si trail when they encountered a bear, which then charged them.
One teen became separated from the group, and his friends reported hearing “a lot of screaming.”
Deputies said the teenager was attacked and injured by the bear but managed to make his way back to the group. Another hiker was injured after falling and twisting an ankle while fleeing the area.
The sheriff’s office said the bear attack victim was “semi-ambulatory” and was being assisted down the mountain by King County Search and Rescue using an ATV. He was taken to a hospital with non-critical injuries related to the encounter, fire officials said.

A hiking group that included first-timers got the ultimate fright Tuesday when a black bear encounter hospitalized one teenager and left another with injuries, according to authorities.
While on the main Mount Si trail near North Bend, a group of about a half-dozen basketball players from Auburn’s Thomas Jefferson High School stumbled across a mother black bear and her cubs, according to King County Search and Rescue.
During the encounter

, a “black bear charged the group and swiped at one of the hikers,” according to Fish & Wildlife, and “a teenage boy received scratches from the black bear.”
He suffered “non-life-threatening injuries and was semi-ambulatory,” said Brandyn Hull, spokesperson for the King County sheriff’s office.
Several hikers called 911, including one person from the group, said Sara Autio, a spokesperson for search and rescue.

A black bear injured a teenage boy hiking in a mountainous recreation area outside Seattle on Tuesday, officials said, prompting a closure of the trail where it happened.

The boy was scratched when the bear charged and “swiped” at him in the early afternoon about 2.7 miles up Mount Si Trail, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said.
He was one of three people hiking together along the trail in the the Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area, the department said in a statement.
“His injuries were very minor, but he was of course terrified,” King County Sheriff’s Office deputy Peter Linde told NBC affiliate
