Alausa lauds UNIBEN's N100 billion sustainable funding initiative
Education minister Tunji Alausa has lauded the University of Benin’s proposed N100 billion Trust Development Fund.
Education minister Tunji Alausa has lauded the University of Benin’s proposed N100 billion Trust Development Fund.
Mr Alausa lauded the initiative when a high-powered delegation from the university visited the minister to brief him on the forthcoming launch of the fund and formally invite him to the event.
According to a statement by the university’s spokeswoman, Benedicta Ehanire, on Friday in Benin, the delegation comprised the pro-chancellor, Umaru Shuaibu.
Other members included the chairman of the board of trustees of the UNIBEN Trust Development Fund (UNIBEN-TDF), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and the vice-chancellor, Edoba Omoregie.
The minister also commended the university management for the trust fund, describing it as a bold and laudable initiative.
He, however, requested that invitations be extended to other pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors across the country to witness the launch.
The minister thanked the delegation for the visit and pledged to attend the event.

The management of the University of Benin has unveiled a N100 billion trust development fund aimed at improving infrastructure and facilities in the institution.
The university said the fund would support projects including a five-star hotel, ultra-modern hostels, a state-of-the-art sports complex and other infrastructure across its campuses.
Speaking during the unveiling of the fund’s web portal on Wednesday in Benin, the Vice Chancellor, Edoba Omoregie, said the initiative was inspired by a similar funding model adopted by the University of Oxford several years ago.
Omoregie said he met deteriorating infrastructure and financial challenges upon resuming office as vice chancellor.
Edoba said, “When I took office as Vice Chancellor, the first task I embarked upon was to visit the hostels. I went to all the hostels in Ugbowo and the Ekheuan campus. has unveiled a N100 billion Trust Development Fund (TDF) to serve as an alternative source of
funding
.
Speaking at the unveiling of the Fund’s web portal, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, said the UNIBENTDF was conceived to close infrastructure gaps at the university.
According to Omoregie, he was inspired by a similar initiative done by Oxford University about 30 years ago.
Omoregie explained that on his return to the university after seven years away, he found dilapidated infrastructure across the university’s two campuses, which, according to him, made it clear that the school needed extra funding beyond its allocations and
