Three workers fell into a sewage treatment plant tank at Belagere, Varthur, on Thursday evening. Two of them died; one was rescued. Rescue efforts are hindered by toxic gases and strong water flow inside the tank, which is approximately 40 feet deep. Oxygen is being pumped into the tank to reduce hazardous gases before search teams enter. The National Disaster Response Force has been deployed to assist in the operation.

Accounts differ on the recovery status of the deceased. One source states the bodies of the two deceased workers have not yet been recovered. Another source reports that the body of engineer Akhilesh has been recovered.

According to m.dailyhunt.in, the deceased workers have been identified as Brijesh and Akhilesh; Akhilesh was working as an engineer and Brijesh as a technician. The incident occurred at Belagere, near Varthur, under the Varthur police station limits. The BWSSB chairperson, Dr. Manjula, ordered a detailed inquiry and directed officials to take strict action against those found responsible.

A separate incident was reported by zeenews.india.com: two workers, Ratan Hotakar and Shivakumar Nandurkar, died in a septic tank in Kalaburagi. Ratan Hotakar entered first and collapsed; Shivakumar Nandurkar entered to rescue him and also collapsed. A case of unnatural death has been registered by Ashok Nagar Police in Kalaburagi related to this incident.
