He will see firsthand the humanitarian and security challenges in Haiti, as well as efforts by national authorities and the international community to restore stability, RFI.fr reported. Guterres last traveled to Port-au-Prince in July 2023, RFI.fr noted. The United Nations reported that 2,300 people have been killed in Haiti this year and 100 people have been kidnapped, confirmed by western sources. According to France24, 1.5 million people have been forced from their homes. France24 also reported that a senior defense ministry official was abducted last week. Haiti has long faced political, economic, and security problems, RFI.fr stated, and is the poorest country in the Americas, RFI.fr reported. Guterres said the international community has failed Haiti as gang violence is worsening, according to Al Jazeera.
