Mohammed Odeh was the head of Hamas's military wing in Gaza and had been appointed to that role after the elimination of Izz al-Din al-Haddad. Odeh was also the head of Hamas's intelligence staff during the October 7, 2023, attacks and was identified as one of the architects of those attacks. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City. The IDF and Shin Bet had been tracking Odeh for several months. The IDF and Shin Bet jointly confirmed his elimination. Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister Israel Katz, confirmed the strike in public posts. An Israeli airstrike also targeted infrastructure sites used by Hamas in Gaza City, as well as an apartment belonging to a Hamas operative who had infiltrated Israel on October 7, 2023, and was part of Odeh’s circle. The IDF stated that steps were taken to mitigate harm to civilians before the strikes. According to the Times of Israel, Odeh was killed alongside his wife and children. A defiant funeral for Odeh was held in Gaza City, where a relative of Odeh vowed that 'the struggle of Palestinian people will continue'.
