An 18-year-old teenager, Romanch Mahajan, died after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park. The horse bolted away from its driver, and at least two passengers were thrown from the carriage. According to the South China Morning Post, Mahajan jumped out of the carriage after his mother fell out and he hit his head on the ground, suffering a fatal head injury. NBC News reported that the carriage toppled onto its side after the crash and that cell phone video captured the collision. The horse-drawn carriage industry has operated in Central Park for more than 150 years. According to Gdelt, the labor union representing the horse-drawn carriage industry and the Central Park Conservancy stated Mahajan was the first person to die in such an accident in over 150 years. New York City leaders, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, vowed to work to end the horse-drawn carriage industry. The South China Morning Post reported that Mahajan was celebrating his high school graduation at the time of the accident. The BBC reported that the driver stepped down from the carriage to take a picture of the passengers.
