Three Indian sailors were killed in a U.S. military strike on the commercial tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman. The U.S. military struck the Palau-flagged tanker in the Gulf of Oman. India’s Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that three Indian seafarers aboard the MT Settebello were dead after their bodies were located and identified. Of the 24 Indian nationals aboard the tanker, 21 were rescued and three were confirmed dead, according to Times of India.

Accounts differ on whether this was the second or third U.S. strike on a merchant vessel with a predominantly Indian crew this week. One source said it was the second reported attack, while U.S. Central Command, as cited by another source, stated it was the third strike on Indian-crewed tankers this week. According to the Times of India, the U.S. military targeted the MT Settebello after alleging it had breached the naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports. The Indian Express reported that the U.S. military warned the tanker nearly 60 times before the strike. Almonitor reported that a U.S. jet fired two missiles into the engine room of the tanker Jalveer off Oman.
