The Taiz transplant team is looking to begin a medical revolution in Yemen. Taiz, the country’s third most populous city, has been the site of the longest-running battlefield in the Yemen war since Houthi forces took over Taiz on March 25, 2015. Large parts of Taiz were reportedly liberated from Houthi dominance, though the Taiz liberation operation was never launched with serious intent. Houthi forces repressed demonstrations, killing six demonstrators. The war erupted after the Houthis invaded the south, prompting the Saudi-led coalition to launch a counteroffensive on March 26, 2015. Taiz is the junction of two crucial highways: an east-west road leading to the coastal city of Mocha on the Red Sea, and another north-south, to Sanaa via Dhamar and Ibb provinces. Taiz has been described as the heart of Yemen’s 2011 uprising against the former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. Before 2011, Taiz witnessed countless demonstrations against the Sanaa government, the largest occurring in December 1992. The unrest and battle in Taiz received little international attention despite high human cost. On Monday, gunmen fired on a Yemeni provincial leader’s motorcade, killing at least five security officers and wounding two others, according to AP News. Two assailants were killed in the shootout, according to AP News. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, according to AP News. The governor’s office said security and military forces were working to bring those behind the attack to justice, according to AP News.
