An eight-year-old Border Collie named Chutou, owned by travel influencer Guo from Henan province, was stolen from the family farm while Guo was on a solo overseas trip. The dog, cared for by Guo’s parents, had amassed more than 1.5 million followers on mainland Chinese social media. Surveillance footage showed two people taking Chutou away on an electric scooter from the family home. Guo returned to China to search for the dog and reportedly tracked down the suspects, who told him Chutou had been sold to a restaurant for 180 yuan. According to one report, the suspects claimed they mistook Chutou for a stray, and one told Guo, 'The dog is dead, stop making a fuss. I did not break the law.' Chutou was killed for consumption after being sold to the restaurant. Guo purchased Chutou from a street vendor in 2018 for more than 2,000 yuan when the puppy was three months old. Guo is seeking justice for Chutou’s death but is stymied by weak pet protection laws in China.
