Nearly all children globally are exposed to at least one climate hazard. More than one billion children are exposed to at least three overlapping climate hazards, and half of the world’s children are exposed to at least three overlapping climate hazards. Children face increasing threats from heatwaves, storms, floods, and droughts as the climate crisis worsens. According to Japan Times, the most common combination of three climate hazards affecting children is drought, extreme heat (above 35 degrees Celsius), and heat waves. This combination affects 296 million children globally, including 74 million in Nigeria, 34 million in Pakistan, and 32 million in India. According to Japan Times, the eight most common climate impacts are coastal flooding, river flooding, drought, tropical storms, heat waves (at least three days above a high temperature threshold), extreme heat, wildfires, and sandstorms.
