Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the move was a response to Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon. President Donald Trump threatened to hit Iran “very hard” and later announced a U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding intended to reopen the strait and address Iran’s nuclear program.

Accounts differ on Trump’s statements about tolls for shipping through the strait. One western outlet reported that Trump threatened to impose U.S. tolls on vessels if a final agreement was not reached within 60 days, while another western outlet reported that Trump claimed the strait would be permanently toll‑free under an agreement with Iran.

Reports also conflict on whether the strait is open. An Indian outlet quoted Trump as saying the Strait of Hormuz has been open for months, whereas outlets from other regions, Qatar, Russia and the West reported that Iran announced the closure of the strait.

Al Jazeera reported that the United States bombed Iran after Trump’s threat and that explosions hit Qeshm Island and ports along the strait following the threat. Daily Sabah reported that Trump accused Iran of bringing down a U.S. military helicopter near the strait and vowed a response. Hindustan Times reported Trump’s claim that the strait has been open for months. The Indian Express reported Trump threatening to walk away from Iran talks over a strait dispute. The New York Post reported Trump threatening to destroy Iran over the closure and floating a 20 % “Guardian Angel” tax on oil passing through the waterway. The New York Times also reported Trump saying he would restart military attacks on Tehran if Iran failed to reach a final nuclear accord. Press TV reported Iran launching coordinated strikes on U.S. military targets in Jordan and Bahrain. Mother Jones reported Iran’s military saying the United States violated its deal to end the war by allowing Israel to continue bombing Lebanon. NPR reported Trump telling ships to “start your engines.”
