Wildfires burned across Spain and Portugal and temperatures rose again in Europe during the heatwave, according to multiple news outlets. The latest fires have devastated more than 17,000 hectares across France, Spain and Portugal, SCMP reported. Hundreds of firefighters battled forest infernos in those three countries on Sunday, SCMP added. Authorities registered thousands of excess deaths during June’s heatwave, SCMP said. SBS reported that fire has affected nearly 440,000 hectares on the continent in 2025, double the average since 2006.

In France, more than 800 hectares have burned in the Herault region, Bluesky reported, and a fire started north of Marseille, Bluesky added. Bluesky also noted that gusts of 80 km/h are driving the first fires of summer in Herault. A cement factory was set alight by a wildfire near a Greek city, SBS reported. Wildfires forced people to flee in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Albania, SBS added, and homes were burned across southern Europe, SBS said. One volunteer died while trying to extinguish a blaze in Spain, SBS reported, and firefighters in Spain continue to battle fires across the country, SBS added.

SCMP reported that temperatures were predicted to reach 40 °C in some places on Sunday.
