A funeral procession for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took place in Tehran on July 6, 2026. Mourners called for revenge against U.S. President Donald Trump, and red “revenge” flags were displayed during the procession. Khamenei’s burial was carried out in his hometown of Mashhad.

According to Bluesky, some mourners also called for revenge against Israel. The Daily Jagran reported that participants chanted “death to America” and “death to Israel.”

Al Monitor reported that coffins of Khamenei and four family members were transported on a truck through Tehran streets. Dawn reported that at least one fighter jet escorted the plane carrying Khamenei’s coffin to Mashhad. GDELT reported that uniformed members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps waved a Shiite religious flag during the procession. Hindustan Times reported that banners or billboards showing Donald Trump’s face with a bullet aimed at his head were displayed at the funeral.

Middle East Eye reported that Tehran’s metro system recorded more than 7 million passenger trips between Saturday evening and Sunday morning for the funeral. Dawn reported that the funeral ceremonies lasted six days and included events in Tehran, Qom and Iraq. The South China Morning Post reported that an Israeli strike assassinated Khamenei in late February (Feb 28) at the start of the war.
