The ancient theater of Epidaurus in Greece hosted an opera performance for the first time in sixty-five years on June 20, 2026. The event was a one-night, sold-out revival of the 1961 staging of Medea, which opened the 2026 edition of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. Italian soprano Anna Pirozzi starred as Medea, the character who kills her children. Pirozzi said in her dressing room shortly before the dress rehearsal on June 18 that she did not want to copy or imitate Maria Callas, who headlined the 1961 performance. She added that she adopted a few gestures from Callas’s 1961 portrayal because she found them very dramatic. The opera performed was Luigi Cherubini’s 1797 Medea, inspired by Euripides’s tragedy. According to nationalopera.gr, the 1961 production had stage direction by Alexis Minotis, sets and costumes by Yannis Tsarouchis, and choreography by Maria Hors. The 2026 reimagined production had artistic direction by Giorgos Koumendakis, conductor Jacques Lacombe, stage direction by Panaghis Pagoulatos, sets by Lili Pezanou, costumes by Tota Pritsa, choreography by Gianna Filippopoulou and Kelly Zambela, lighting by Christos Tziogkas, and chorus master Agathangelos Georgakatos. According to nationalopera.gr, the Greek National Opera presented the exhibition Callas Point at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus from June 18 to 21, 2026, curated by Dionysis Fotopoulos, a set designer.
