Botswana and Lesotho have elevated their longstanding cooperation framework to a fully-fledged Bi-National Commission (BNC). The upgrade from the Joint Commission on Technical and Economic Cooperation (JCTEC) followed the signing of the agreement establishing the BNC in Maseru in July 2025. President Duma Boko and Lesotho Prime Minister Samuel Matekane will launch and preside over the inaugural BNC meeting on June 17-18. Speaking at the session on June 15, Permanent Secretary Thuso Ramodimoosi said the meeting reaffirmed both countries' commitment to economic and technical cooperation. According to dailynews.gov.bw, Ramodimoosi added that this development reflects shared values of solidarity, mutual respect and good neighbourliness, and positions the relationship to deliver tangible benefits for citizens. He said the new framework marks a shift from episodic diplomacy to structured, purposeful, and result-driven partnership focused on implementation. Boko identified water and energy, trade and investment, agriculture, education, defense, and natural resource management as priority areas. He urged the removal of cross-border barriers and leveraging complementary strengths under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
