Melat Kiros defeated incumbent Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado's 1st Congressional District on Tuesday. Kiros, 29, is identified as a democratic socialist and is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. DeGette had served 15 terms, nearly three decades, in Congress.

When the race was called, 78 % of the vote had been counted and Kiros was leading by a nearly 7,000‑vote margin, according to the Hindu. The Hindu also noted that the race was called by multiple media outlets. RawStory.com reported that Kiros received more than 49 % of the vote.

Kiros, described by NPR as a political newcomer and a former lawyer (Al Jazeera), would become the first Gen Z woman in Congress if seated. She criticized Democrats for supporting Israel during the highly charged description of the Israel‑Gaza conflict, a stance reported by Al Jazeera. The Guardian reported that support for Israel was a wedge issue among voters in the campaign.

The primary outcome marks a change in representation for the district, with Kiros set to replace a long‑standing incumbent after nearly 30 years of service.
