The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda is caused by the Bundibugyo virus. As of 1 June 2026, TASS reported that the World Health Organization recorded 48 deaths and 321 cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and nine confirmed cases and one death in Uganda. On 6 June 2026, ECDC.europa.eu reported that the DRC Ministry of Health recorded 515 confirmed cases and 91 confirmed deaths, while Uganda reported 19 confirmed cases and two deaths. WHO.int reported 134 confirmed cases and 18 confirmed deaths across both countries as of 29 May 2026, suggesting a rapid increase or inconsistency in aggregation. As of 27 May 2026, WHO.int reported 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths in the DRC, with no clarification on overlap with confirmed cases. The outbreak in September 2025 was confined to six health areas within Bulape Health Zone in Kasai Province, with 57 cases and 35 deaths reported, including 10 probable cases retrospectively classified. By June 2026, case counts had expanded significantly beyond this initial zone. As of 6 June 2026, ECDC.europa.eu reported that 283 individuals were hospitalized in isolation in the DRC, with transmission concentrated in Ituri Province (487 confirmed cases from 17 health zones), North Kivu Province (25 cases from seven health zones), and South Kivu Province (three cases from one health zone). On 7 June 2026, ECDC.europa.eu reported 134 new confirmed cases and 27 new deaths in the DRC since the previous update on 5 June.
