Sri Lanka is witnessing an increase in cybercrime, with over 5,400 complaints reported in 2025. Nearly 90% of reported cases are linked to Facebook, and other social media platforms including WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat are also commonly used. AI tools are being used in cybercrimes to generate malware, deepfakes, and phishing scams. Cybercrime in Sri Lanka includes harassment, misinformation, financial fraud, ransomware attacks targeting government bodies and banks, human trafficking networks, fake profiles, account hijackings, extortion, and manipulation of public opinion. In the first three months of 2025, 2,887 social media and computer-related crimes were recorded, including 364 financial fraud cases, according to newsfirst.lk. Criminal networks favour Sri Lanka due to ease of getting tourist visas and limited regulation on SIM cards and internet connections, according to the guardian.
