A high-level delegation of 14 EU diplomats, led by Wolfram Vetter, visited Sudan on 14–15 June 2026. This was the first visit of its kind since the outbreak of war in April 2023. The delegation met with Sudanese officials, including the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, his deputy, and the Prime Minister. Discussions centered on the escalating humanitarian crisis and the delivery of aid. The delegation stated that the visit was a sign of sympathy for Sudanese people who have endured immense suffering over four years of war, and that Heads of Mission came to listen and gain a deeper understanding of the situation, bound by longstanding relationships and shared interests. The European Union has maintained a fully accredited diplomatic mission to Sudan since the 1970s, but since April 15, 2023, the EU Delegation to Sudan was reallocated to Cairo, according to eeas.europa.eu. The EU Delegation to the Republic of Sudan is headed by a chargé d'affaires. The civil war in Sudan began on April 15, 2023, between two rival factions of the military government: the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, according to eeas.europa.eu. Several armed groups have taken part in the belligerence on both sides of the conflict, according to eeas.europa.eu.
