The National Industrial Court in Abuja ordered the Federal Government to register the National Association of Non-Teaching Staff of Nigerian Universities (NANTS) as a trade union. According to allafrica.com, the court directed the Registrar of Trade Unions and other relevant authorities to immediately register NANTS and issue it a certificate of registration in line with the Trade Unions Act. The lawsuit that led to the court order was instituted by Comrade Niyi Akinnibi on behalf of NANTS, with the defendants being the Registrar of Trade Unions, the Minister of Labour and Employment, and the Attorney General of the Federation. The claimant sought an order compelling the government to recognise NANTS as a duly registered trade union representing non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities.
