Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian doctor, has been detained by Israel since 2024, a fact confirmed by multiple news outlets. In March, UN experts demanded his release, according to the Guardian. A legal challenge to his detention was filed with Israel’s Supreme Court, reported by Bluesky. Israel submitted a request on June 3 to transfer him from Naqab Prison to solitary confinement in Nafha Prison, also reported by Bluesky.

The doctor was transferred from Ketziot prison, the Guardian reported, and placed in solitary confinement in a maximum‑security prison, the same source added. Bluesky also noted the request to move him to Nafha Prison.

His son said his father now occupies a cell barely large enough to sit, the Guardian reported. Physicians for Human Rights said Abu Safiya is facing an immediate threat to his life, according to MiddleEastMonitor. Concerns about his health, safety and overall well‑being were raised, reported by Bluesky. During a July 2 visit to the Rakefet detention facility in Nitzan Prison, lawyer Nasser Odeh documented serious injuries, signs of physical abuse, breathing difficulties and repeated loss of consciousness, MiddleEastMonitor reported. Abu Safiya was brought to the meeting shackled at both hands and feet and escorted by masked prison guards, the outlet added. He showed fresh injuries and severe bruising around his head, eyes, ears and neck, and his condition had deteriorated to the point that he was difficult to recognize, also reported by MiddleEastMonitor.

The Guardian reported that Abu Safiya has been held for more than 500 days without formal charges.
