Iran’s annual inflation rate reached a record high in May, its highest level since World War II, according to reports from India and Qatar. Accounts differ on whether this is truly the highest since WWII, as one source states Iran experienced higher inflation in 1942 during WWII due to British and Soviet invasions and the takeover of its railways, which disrupted food supplies. That claim, however, is reported only by Bluesky. Bluesky also reported that the lack of food, worsened by a poor harvest, sparked hyperinflation and a famine, and that hunger and a typhus outbreak killed many. According to The Hindu, economic turmoil and a weakened currency are contributing to Iran’s current inflation, and concerns over renewed conflict are also playing a role. Al Jazeera reported that the war with the US is not the only factor driving prices skywards.
