A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, June 8, 2026. Buildings collapsed in the region, and a 1-meter tsunami was generated. Tsunami warnings were issued in the southern Philippines, northern Indonesia, and the Malaysian state of Sabah. According to Dawn, tsunami alerts were also issued in those areas, and the quake was felt in Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia, 420 km away. Power outages were reported after the earthquake, and people were urged to go to higher ground. Video from Mahayahay Elementary School showed school children screaming and crying during the quake. Dust and debris were visible outside a building in General Santos City, and vehicles were damaged by debris in the Mindanao region.

Casualty figures differ across reports. Some sources state at least 15 people were killed, while others report at least 19, 32, 35, 8, 4, or 1 death. According to Al Jazeera, more than 129 people were injured; other sources report more than 200 injured, more than 130 injured, or only four injured. TASS reported four injuries and one death; AP News reported four deaths and power outages; SCMP reported more than 130 injuries; and Bluesky reported at least 32 deaths. The Bangkok Post reported at least eight deaths, and AP News reported at least four deaths.
