anyinsola Ajayi has claimed the men’s 100m title at the 2026 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), continuing Nigeria’s strong presence in American collegiate athletics.
The 21-year-old athlete, who represents Auburn University, becomes only the second Nigerian to win the American sprint crown at the event after Divine Oduduru in 2018.
Ajayi recorded a stunning 9.72 seconds in the final, a time that would have surpassed the African record held by Ferdinand Omanyala, but it was ruled ineligible for record purposes due to a +2.2 m/s tailwind.
Competing in Eugene, Oregon, Ajayi dominated the race, pulling clear of the field by nearly 15 metres in the closing stage. Jaiden Reid of LSU finished second in 9.82s, while Arkansas’ Jelani Watkins came third.

Nigerian sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi has etched his name into the country’s athletics history after breaking the men’s 100m national record at the 2026 NCAA Division I East First Round track and field meet in the United States.
The 21-year-old Auburn University athlete clocked an astonishing 9.84 seconds in one of the quarter-final heats in the early hours of Saturday, setting a new Nigerian record in the event.
Ajayi’s performance eclipsed the previous mark of 9.85 seconds set by former sprint star Olusoji Fasuba in May 2006, ending a national record that had stood for two decades.
The feat marks another milestone in the athlete’s rapid rise on the global sprinting stage. Ajayi had signalled his potential to rewrite the record books in recent years, notably at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where he ran 9.88 seconds in the heats to become the first Nigerian in 18 years to qualify for the men’s 100m final. He went on to finish sixth in the final.
His latest performance also makes him the fastest man in the world so far in 2026, surpassing the previous world-leading …

It shattered Michael Norman's (USC) record of 43.61 set in 2018.
"I feel amazing,"

. "Words can’t express how I feel right now."
Ogazi said he was surprised when he saw the record-breaking number appear on the Hayward Field jumbotron, but not because he didn't think he had that kind of time in him.
He said his NCAA regional time of 43.82 a few weeks ago felt "easy" and that Friday's race at Hayward Field was easily the best reaction he's had to the starting gun this season. Still, he didn't quite expect to see that kind of time show on the screen following the race.
"It’s a dream come true," Ogazi said of setting the record. "Growing up I’ve always wanted to get a collegiate record."
Ogazi said he's looked up to peers Norman, …
