Donald Trump has not been super involved in the World Cup in recent weeks, but he and his administration might have stepped in at a crucial moment for the USMNT.
Folarin Balogun’s one-game ban for getting sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina has been suspended for a year, and just in time for the US’ round of 16 clash against Belgium.
The decision was announced by FIFA on Sunday. There is precedent for such a decision, but there is also a growing belief that external factors — namely the Trump administration — had a part to play. That’s the claim now being made by Ben Jacobs.
FIFA have suspended Folarin Balogun's red card ban for one year, meaning he will be available for USA vs Belgium! 😯 What's your reaction to the decision?

President Donald Trump said he called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to ask for a review of the red card issued to U.S. men’s national team striker Folarin Balogun, arguing the collision wasn’t a foul and calling the referee “very suspect.”
Folarin Balogun received a red card for stepping awkwardly on the right ankle of Tarik Muharemović of Bosnia-Herzegovina in a 2-0 round of 32 win on Wednesday, triggering an automatic one-game suspension. U.S. President Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino after the game asking FIFA review the red card, and then FIFA announced Sunday that the suspension had been lifted for the round of 16 match, an extraordinary move that triggered praise from Trump and outrage from Belgium’s team. FIFA's media account on Monday said the association had rejected an appeal by Belgian soccer authorities that challenged the eligibility of U.S. Men's National Team strikerFolarin Balogunto play againstBelgiumin aWorld Cupknockout game in Seattle on Monday night.
FIFA, soccer's international governing body, said that the Royal Belgian Football Association challenge "was rendered inadmissible on the grounds that the RBFA is not a party to the proceedings and, as such, has no standing to appeal the decision" to give Balogun a one-game suspension, FIFA's media account on X said.

United States President Donald Trump has upended the
2026 World Cup
after personally intervening to have a red card against USA striker Folarin Balogun overturned — the first such reversal at football's showpiece tournament in over six decades.
Balogun had been expected to miss Monday's last-16 clash against Belgium after picking up a red card for an awkward challenge on Bosnia's Tarik Muharemovic, a decision USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino branded unjust.
But after the US President reportedly phoned FIFA President Gianni Infantino directly to demand a review, football's governing body suspended the ban, clearing the 25-year-old to play.
President Trump called the president of FIFA in the hours after the U.S. men’s soccer team played Wednesday and asked him to review the suspension of the team’s top goal scorer in the World Cup, Folarin Balogun, after he was given a red card.Read more: nyti.ms/4vSHMTS

European lawmakers have called for a probe into FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, after the organisation’s unprecedented decision to overturn the World Cup suspension of US striker Folarin Balogun, raising questions about whether pressure from US President Donald Trump impacted the move.
A group of members of the European parliament on Tuesday launched an initiative calling for an investigation into Infantino’s role in the decision, Euronews reported.
A letter being shared in the European parliament urged football associations across the European Union to seek a formal FIFA review of the decision-making process and any possible political interference.
Balogun, who is the US’s top goalscorer in the tournament, was shown a red card during the US victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, which normally would force him to sit out the next game.
However,FIFA lifted his suspensionfor a match against Belgium on Monday, after Trump called Infantino, who he has beenfriendly with for years.

United States President Donald Trump has admitted he talked with FIFA President Gianni Infantino about Folarin Balogun's suspension, leading the soccer governing body's disciplinary committee to overturn the decision on Sunday and allow Balogun to play against Belgium on Monday. The Belgium soccer federation was granted the right to appeal the controversial decision that led FIFA to

, but it was later ruled as "inadmissible".
The American player was sent off in the second half of the United States'
victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina
for a challenge on a defender, which the referee punished with a red card following a VAR review. However, Belgium will have the right to appeal against the controversial decision with submissions due Monday morning, and a ruling possible by game time, though FIFA would not guarantee that would be the case, according to a report from the Athletic.

FIFA on Sunday announced that Balogun would be eligible to play in the Round of 16 against Belgium Monday night, igniting questions around the integrity of the tournament.
“All I did was ask for a review. I didn’t say, ‘You have to do this,’” Trump said from the Oval Office, adding that he “didn’t think it was a foul.” He referred to the incident as “two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other.”
“He didn’t do anything wrong,” Trump said of the US player.

However, FIFA's disciplinary committee reportedly rescinded the suspension, clearing the striker to return for the knockout fixture.
The ruling quickly triggered widespread discussion on social media, with some fans speculating that the decision may have been influenced by the close relationship and interactions between Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
A userwrote on X, "Trump had some words with Gianni Infantino."
Another jokinglyposted, "In the near future, Trump will “accidentally” mention his recent conversation with Gianni Infantino."
One more fanadded, "Good to see Gianni still is taking phone calls from Trump...."

PresidentDonald Trumpon Monday defended making a phone call to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, which led to the soccer association controversially overturning a one-game World Cup suspension of U.S. Men's National Team strikerFolarin Balogun.
"I asked for a review because I didn't think it was a foul," Trump said, referring to a referee issuing Balogun a red card in his team's victory last week over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"I didn't know what the hell a red card was," Trump told reporters at theWhite Housefor an Oval Office event promoting the launch ofTrump Accounts, an investment vehicle for children.
The card led to Balogun being ejected from that match — and to the 25-year-old being barred from playing in the U.S.'s game on Monday night against Belgium.
But FIFA on Sunday suspended the ban, allowing Balogun to play in Monday night's knockout match against Belgium in Seattle.
"I didn't tell him what to do. I can't tell him what to do," Trump said of his call to Infantino. "And I don't believe he made the decision."

GENEVA — With the integrity of FIFA and the World Cup under attack from European soccer leaders, FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged taking a call from President Donald Trump before U.S. forward Folarin Balogun was cleared to play against Belgium later Monday.
Balogun was issued a red card in the U.S. match vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina last week, resulting in a suspension for the Belgium contest. Trump called Infantino after the game with Bosnia to plead his case to overturn the call, and FIFA lifted the suspension on Sunday.
That prompted a day of off-field furor at the World Cup
The Belgian soccer federation challenged FIFA’s ruling not to enforce a ban on Balogun. The European soccer body UEFA described the decision as an “incomprehensible” breach of soccer’s rule of law. Trump acknowledged calling Infantino and took credit for getting FIFA to review the red card.

President Donald Trump
defended his heavily scrutinized decision to ask FIFA President Gianni Infantino to
review the controversial red card
issued to U.S. Men's National Soccer Team forward Folarin Balogun in the World Cup, calling the penalty "very unfair" and "horrible."
"All I did, I asked for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul," Trump told reporters on July 6 in the Oval Office, confirming that he "spoke to Gianni" about the matter last week.
"I saw the play, and I'm a person that loves sports and who was a good athlete. I understand sports really well. And that wasn't a foul. That wasn't even an infraction. That was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other," the president said.

BRUSSELS — The European Commission has demanded “fair play and transparent competition” in sport after a suspension for U.S. star Folarin Balogun was overturned following a call between President Donald Trump and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
Speaking on Monday, European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova declined to comment on Balogun’s case — but stressed that sporting federations must be free to make their own decisions.
“We respect the autonomy of sport, and we respect the right of sports federations to decide on the criteria under which participants compete,” Hrncirova said.

She added, however, that “any such decision should, obviously, be made on the basis of objective and transparent criteria,” stressing more broadly that “the EU supports the principle of fair play and transparent competition.”
Balogun received a red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina during the first knockout round, which meant he would be suspended for the last-16 game against Belgium. After Trump called Infantino on Thursday, the suspension was revoked.

Former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp on Monday slammed FIFA’s decision to overturn US striker Folarin Balogun’s suspension, which reportedly took place after an intervention from US President Donald Trump.
Balogun was set to miss Monday’s last-16 knockout clash with Belgium having picked up a red card in his previous match, but FIFA on Sunday suspended the ban for a year, making the forward eligible to play.
Sources told AFP that Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino, asking him to review Balogun’s punishment.
Former Liverpool manager Klopp, who is set to become the next Germany manager after Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, hit out at the decision.
“It’s a red card, even if it’s a shame because Balogun can’t play, but it’s there in the rules,” Klopp said.
“This is our game, not theirs... If Trump and Infantino really worked this all out between themselves, that’s crazy. It calls everything into question...
“These two individuals, neither of whom has a clue about football, shouldn’t have anything to do with it,” the 59-year-old added.

The United States’ World Cup campaign took an extraordinary turn on Sunday when FIFA made the unprecedented decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic red-card ban, clearing the striker to face Belgium in Monday's last-16 clash after US President Donald Trump personally urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the case.
The move thrust FIFA’s disciplinary process into the global spotlight, prompted an angry response from Belgium and ensured that one of this tournament’s biggest talking points would center not on tactics or team selection, but on the relationship between football’s governing body and political power.
Within minutes, the decision had ignited one of the tournament’s biggest media storms, dominating sports bulletins and talk shows as pundits, commentators and former players argued over whether FIFA had upheld justice or undermined its own rules.
As questions mounted over the circumstances surrounding the decision, FIFA did not respond to multiple Reuters requests for comment about the decision and Trump’s call with Infantino.

GENEVA (AP) —With the integrity of FIFA and the World Cup under attack from European soccer leaders, FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged taking a call from President Donald Trump before U.S. forward Folarin Balogun was cleared to play against Belgium later Monday.
Balogun was issued a red card in the U.S. match vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina last week, resulting in a suspension for the Belgium contest. Trump called Infantino after the game with Bosnia to plead his case to overturn the call, and FIFA lifted the suspension on Sunday.
That prompted a day of off-field furor at the World Cup.
The Belgian soccer federation challenged FIFA's ruling not to enforce a ban on Balogun. The European soccer body UEFA described the decision as an "incomprehensible" breach of soccer's rule of law. Trump acknowledged calling Infantino and took credit for getting FIFA to review the red card.
A chaotic and unprecedented day in modern World Cup history then saw a FIFA appeals judge dismiss Belgium's legal challenge, fewer than eight hours before kickoff in Seattl…

President Donald Trump’s role in FIFA’s stunning decision to allow striker
Folarin Balogun
to be eligible to play against Belgium on Monday in Seattle is under the microscope.
A source familiar with the matter told CNN on Sunday that Trump spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino this week after Balogun’s red card and asked the FIFA leader to review the call. On Sunday afternoon, soccer’s governing body announced it was using an obscure rule to suspend Balogun’s automatic one-match ban for one year, allowing the striker to play against Belgium in the Round of 16.
The news that the 25-year-old forward would no longer serve an automatic one-match suspension following a straight red card during the US’ 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina came as a shock. For days, the US and its fans had operated under the assumption that there was no mechanism for the stri…

USMNT forward Folarin Balogun's red card has been overturned, meaning he is currently clear to play Belgium in theirFIFA World Cupround of 16 clash on Monday (6 July).
And it appearsUS president Donald Trumphas been at the centre of getting this decision reversed.
The 25-year-old forward scored and was then sent off in USMNT's 2-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina in their round of 32 clash. It was Balogun's third goal of the tournament but he then saw quite a harsh red card given against him.
A red card leads to a one-game ban at the FIFA World Cup and can even be extended depending on the severity of the punishable act.
Red cards can even be overturned on review, meaning the player affected faces no further punishment such as missing games, if it was deemed the referee incorrectly issued a red card during the match.
However FIFA made an unprecedented move of suspending Balogun's red card for a year with seemingly no clear explanation as to why, meaning he can be selected for USMNT'…
