The United States fell six places from a year earlier to 134th, ranking just behind Venezuela and close to Iran (144th), a country it is currently at war with. Russia ranks last out of 163 countries, preceded by Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ukraine and Israel.
Overall, the report suggests global peace has continued to deteriorate. The number of active state-based conflicts rose to 61, the highest level since the Second World War.
The institute also raises concerns that drones are becoming a defining weapon of modern warfare.

Each year, the Institute for Economics and Peace releases theGlobal Peace Index. This is a study of 163 independent nations and territories around the world, comprising approximately 99.7% of the world’s total population, that analyzes which nations are thesafestand most peaceful, as well as which are themost dangerous. The GPI evaluates a total of 23 indicators to compile the list, which can be sorted into three distinct categories: militarization, safety and security, and domestic and international conflict. These indicators are then combined into a single Peace Index Score.
As of 2024, the most peaceful country in the world is Iceland (1.112). This should come as no surprise to those familiar with the index, as Iceland has taken the top spot for 16 years in a row. Qualities that make it the most peaceful nation on Earth include low crime rates, robust education and welfare systems, fair pay for workers, and virtually non-existent tension among the economic classes.

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) released its
Global Peace Index 2026
on June 9, an annual ranking of the peacefulness of 163 countries since 2008. The non-partisan, non-profit organization used 23 indicators – such as level of violent crime and political instability – to score a country in three domains: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarization.
This year, the index found that peacefulness was declining globally for the 12th consecutive year – that's 119 countries less peaceful than they were in 2008, mainly driven by conflict.
