China tests missile from nuclear-powered PLA Navy submarine in western Pacific ocean
China has conducted a missile launch from a nuclear submarine in the Western Pacific, marking a routine test rather than a direct threat to any neighboring country. This event highlights China's growing nuclear deterrent and enhanced sea-based strike capabilities during a peak military exercise season. The test raised alarms following previous notifications to New Zealand, coinciding with Australia and Fiji's declaration of a groundbreaking military alliance.

China missile test: US raises concern, urges arms control talks - India ...
The United States has expressed concern over China's test launch of a nuclear-capable missile and said it remains firm in its defence commitments to allies and partners. Washington also urged Beijing to join meaningful arms control talks and to regularly notify intercontinental-range ballistic missile and space launches in line with commitments made by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The remarks came after China said it had successfully test-fired a long-range strategic missile with a dummy warhead from one of its nuclear-powered submarines in the Pacific Ocean on Monday. Beijing described the launch as part of the annual training of the PLA Navy and said relevant countries had been informed in advance.
In a statement, US Department of State spokesperson Tommy Pigott said, "The United States monitored China's test launch from a submarine of an unarmed intercontinental-range ballistic missile, which landed in the southern Pacific Ocean." He said that at a time when the United States is working harder than ever to prevent nuclear proliferation, China is doing the opposite.

The United States on Monday expressed concern over China's expanding nuclear programme after Beijing test-fired a long-range ballistic missile carrying a dummy warhead into the Pacific Ocean, in a rare launch that analysts said showcased China's growing sea-based nuclear reach while signalling its military posture toward regional rivals, including Japan and Taiwan.
While India has also conducted submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) tests in recent years, those launches have largely been confined to designated test areas in the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean as part of validating its second-strike nuclear deterrent.
The launch, conducted from a nuclear-powered submarine, marked China's second known intercontinental-range missile test over international waters in less than two years, following a similar launch in September 2024.

On July 6, Chinafired offa submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) carrying a training warhead from a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific Ocean. This marked China’s second intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch into the Pacific region, following the PLA Rocket Force’s test of a land-based ICBM in 2024.
As in 2024, Beijing did not publicly disclose detailed information about the operation. The submarine’s location, the missile type, and the missile’s flight path all remain unknown. This lack of transparency makes it difficult for outside observers to assess the current development of the PLA’s nuclear strike capabilities.
Although the details of the PLA’s missile launch remain unclear, Beijing did notify selected countries in advance, thereby offering clues about the intent behind the launch. Before the SLBM was fired, China informed countries including Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea (PNG), and Japan through diplomatic channels – although several of the notified governments said they had been informedmere hoursin advance.

China has confirmed it has test launched a strategic missile from a submarine in the Pacific Ocean.
Chinese state media said the test was a missile topped with a dummy warhead in "designated waters" as part of a routine arrangement of annual military training.
Australia had been informed of the missile test ahead of time, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said.
She said China's plan to test-fire a missile in the Pacific underscores the need for nations in the region to work together to determine their own futures.
"Australia has been clear with China that we regard this as destabilising to the region," the foreign minister told reporters in Suva.
"This proposed test, is in the context of a rapid military build up by China, which is lacking in the transparency and reassurance as to intent that the region expects."
It follows the landmark Ocean of Peace alliance struck between Australia and Fiji on Monday, which includes mutual-defence obligations.
The treaty is also open to other Pacific nations joining, and comes amid a push by Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale for a region-wide pact.
It is Fiji's first alliance and comes off the back of a number of security agreements …

China has launched a ballistic missile into the South Pacific, drawing international criticism from many countries in the region
BANGKOK --When Chinalaunched a ballistic missileinto the South Pacific Ocean on Monday, it was a rare test of a nuclear-capable weapons system that drew international rebuke.
Arriving two years after a similar missile launch in international waters in the Pacific, the test by the People's Liberation Army caught the attention of small island nations whose leaders have increasingly urged bigger countries to stop using the vast oceanic region for power struggles. But Beijing's message was largely for just one country, experts say: the United States.
“The most important message is the PLA is becoming a powerful military with a very strong strategic nuclear capability,” said Tong Zhao, a senior fellow with the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a think tank.
The test, launched from a nuclear-powered submarine, was a demonstration of the sea-based leg of China's nuclear triad capability, which refers to the ability to have land, sea, and air-based nuclear syste…

China has successfully test-fired a ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine in the western Pacific, highlighting its growing sea-based nuclear deterrent. This development underscores the evolution of Beijing's 'Giant Wave' missile program, from the limited-range JL-1 to the intercontinental JL-3. The new missile significantly enhances China's second-strike capability, allowing submarines to strike distant targets from safer waters.

China is reportedly set to conduct a test of a nuclear-capable long-range missile with a dummy warhead in the South Pacific within the next 24 hours, according to Australian media. This test is part of the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force’s routine annual training exercises and involves a Dong Feng-31AG variant. Despite China’s assertions that the test complies with international law and is not aimed at any specific country, the action has raised concerns among regional nations including Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Island nations due to its location within the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone. The test, which is the second full-range ICBM launch over international waters in 44 years, is intended to demonstrate delivery accuracy and systems validation rather than immediate military escalation.
