Cristiano Ronaldowasted several clear cut chances in Portugal's final warm-up match ahead of the FIFA World Cup, as debate continues over the veteran's role for the national team.
Ronaldo, 41, was chosen to lead the line for Portugal in their friendly againstNigeriain Leiria, before Roberto Martinez's side head to the United States.
The veteran forward was given the opportunity to open the scoring in the ninth minute as he ran onto a through ball by Nelson Semedo, but ultimately fired wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Ronaldo was then seen blasting the ball away in frustration after it came back off the advertising hoardings and into his path.
His frustration continued to grow after Ronaldo miskicked another effort, before Portugal eventually took a 23rd minute lead through Pedro Neto.
Nigeria equalised before half-time through Akor Adams, with Portugal then making nine changes at the break with only Ronaldo remaining of their outfield players from the first half.

Cristiano Ronaldo #7 of Portugal shows dejection after the team's 0-1 defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Portugal and Spain at Dallas Stadium on July 06, 2026 in Arlington, Texas.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been filled with
stunning upsets
and
emotional wins
. But perhaps, most bittersweet were the final dances from some of the greatest soccer players seen in a generation.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, Neymar of Brazil, Guillermo Ochoa of Mexico and Manuel Neuer of Germany are a few of the footballers who competed in their last World Cup — collapsing in tears, bowing to fans and kissing the post before they bid farewell.
Ronaldo's run ended on Monday after Portugal lost to Spain 1-0. The Portuguese superstar was 21 when he made his first World Cup appearance. This summer marked his sixth — a feat only shared with Argentina's Lionel Messi.

The Cristiano Ronaldo problem standing between Portugal and World Cup ...
If 1966 represented a
high point in England’s footballing history
, it did for Portugal, too. Six decades on, their best performance in a World Cup remains the third place they secured at their first attempt. It might be unfair to frame everything that has followed as sixty years of hurt, however. In 2016,
Portugal became champions of Europe
. In the 21st century, as they excelled at exporting players and managers, arguably no footballing nation has had a bigger impact, relative to its size, than Portugal.
But perhaps that has not really been reflected in World Cups. Portugal reached a second semi-final in 2006, albeit in a tournament when they scored just two goals in four knockout games. They had a glorious chance to reach a third in 2022, but lost a quarter-final as Morocco instead became Africa’s first semi-finalists.
To varying degrees, their other four tournaments could be presented as underachievement: certainly the group-stage exits in 2002 and 2014, arguably the last-16 defeat in 2010 – even if it was to eventual winners Spain – and then 2018.

Love him or hate him, Cristiano Ronaldo has certainly left his mark on the pitch.
With nearly 1,000 goals for club and country under his belt, the Al-Nassr and Portugal superstar has reached the highest of zeniths during his glittering career. At 41, though, things have gotten slightly more turgid for the gifted goal-scorer, who has looked far less prolific than he did during his Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus years.
Ronaldo has been something of an albatross in Roberto Martinez's attack, failing to offer much support in transitions and often neutering Portugal's attacks. He still has the ability to score goals — he collected 30 in 37 matches for Al-Nassr. But his all-around play has tailed off in a major way, leading some to believe the end of his international career could be nigh.
Here's what we know so far about Ronaldo's future prospects at club and international level.

At 41 years old,
Cristiano Ronaldo
had a long time to wait to finally score in a
World Cup
knockout round. And it came at a time when his team needed it most.
Ronaldo’s converted penalty kick-started Portugal’s comeback, overcoming a goal deficit to advance to the Round of 16 with a 2-1 win over Croatia. But Portugal needed a controversial video decision at the death to secure the victory. More on that later.
Ronaldo and company will take on Spain, who won earlier Thursday 3-0 against Austria, in the Round of 16 on July 6.

HOUSTON --Portugalcoach Roberto Martinez brushed aside concerns, about both his team and starCristiano Ronaldo's goal-scoring drought in major competitions, following Portugal's frustrating 1-1 draw with Congo DR on Wednesday at NRG Stadium.
Ronaldo was held scoreless for the fifth straight World Cup match and the 10th consecutive game in a major competitions, including World Cups and European championships.
He hasn't scored a non-penalty goal in a major competition since June 19, 2021, and despite his playing nearly every minute, Portugal have scored just one goal in their last four matches in major competitions.

Ronaldo played all 90 minutes on Wednesday despite generating just three shot attempts and putting none on goal. It was the sixth time that the Al Nassr striker finished without a shot on target at a World Cup.
As Martinez searched for an answer, substituting Ronaldo evidently wasn't one of the options.
"It makes no sense to get the best goal scorer in world football out in a game that you need goals," he said.

Bombshell Cristiano Ronaldo 'Retirement' News Drops at 2026 World Cup
On the day of Portugal’s round of 32 clash against Croatia, Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister teased the 2026 World Cup is the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s “last dance” for the national team.
Ronaldo made history this summer, alongside Lionel Messi and Guillermo Ochoa, by competing in his sixth World Cup. He also

Now at 41 years old, Ronaldo is always fielding questions of his potential retirement, both from the international stage and the club level. The Al Nassr captain has never given an exact date beyond a loose estimation in 2025 of a couple more years, but his sister Kátia Aveiro seemingly just spoiled the secret when it comes to his Portugal chapter.
Speaking to reporters outside BMO Field in Toronto ahead of

Portugal World Cup 2026: 27-Player Squad & Ronaldo Selection
Roberto Martínez announced Portugal's 27-player World Cup squad
at a press conference, revealing his tactical rationale for selecting a larger roster than the traditional 23 players. The decision reflects unique tournament logistics, positional versatility demands, and one high-profile rejection from a dual-nationality prospect who chose France over the European champions.
The expanded roster—larger than typical tournament squads—reflects what Martínez describes as the unique challenges of a
48-team competition spread across three countries
, with matches scheduled in extreme heat and humidity, six-day gaps between fixtures, and substantial time zone shifts across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Why This Matters
•
Squad size strategy
: Portugal carries
27 players instead of the standard 23
, citing environmental factors (temperature, time zones) and the need for depth at high-intensity positions like full-back.
•
Ronaldo's sixth World Cup

TEXAS: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has set a new FIFA World Cup record by becoming the oldest outfield player to start a match in the tournament’s history, aged 41 years and 132 days, during his side’s clash against DR Congo in the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Wednesday (local time).
Ronaldo broke the previous record held by Canada’s Atiba Hutchinson, who had started a World Cup match at 39 years and 296 days against Croatia during the 2022 edition, according to FotMob. The Portugal forward achieved the milestone as he was named in the starting XI against DR Congo, extending his remarkable longevity and continuing presence at the highest level of international football.
Additionally, Ronaldo has also become only the second men’s player in history to feature in six FIFA World Cups, joining Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the elite list.
Ronaldo first featured at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, followed by successive editions in 2010 (South Africa), 2014 (Brazil), 2018 (Russia), 2022 (Qatar), and 2026 (North America), consistently representing Portugal across two decades at the highest level.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic controversially stated that Portugal cannot win the 2026 World Cup with a 41-year-old Ronaldo leading the attack, suggesting his legendary status is overshadowing current form. Despite Ronaldo scoring, Gonçalo Ramos' late winner highlighted the team's potential, leaving many questioning the veteran's continued prominence.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the last major star to arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the legendary Portugal striker made an emphatic statement on Tuesday with two goals in a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan at Houston Stadium.
The win moved Portugal to four points in Group K and closer to a spot in the round of 32. On the flip side, tournament debutants Uzbekistan has now lost its first two games and looks to be heading home after its group stage finale.
Ronaldo and Portugal will next take on Colombia on Saturday in a game that will decide its group. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, will look for its first win or point against DR Congo.

PortugalcaptainCristiano Ronaldowill play his sixth and finalFIFA World Cupin 2026 at 41 years old. It's one more example of the astounding longevity that has powered his quest to score 1,000 goals. But in a career filled with success, records and joy, this tournament is the only painful exception.
The scale of CR7's World Cup frustration is such that he has continually changed his own expectations over the years. His impact on the Portuguese national team is significant -- he led Portugal to their first-ever titles at Euro 2016 and in the 2019 and 2025 UEFA Nations Leagues. But the most prestigious international competition has been a bridge too far for him, to the extent that last November he recanted on his longtime stance by claiming it is "not a dream" for him to win it.
That has not stopped him from trying still. And while he is no longer one of the best players on the planet as he was for so many years, he is still surrounded by what might be the best generation his country has produced in decades. His goal in North America, therefore, will be to correct course on a road marked by disappointment rather than illustr…

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is yet to get his hands on the most prestigious of international prizes, but will get another shot at that title in 2026. Martinez sees the evergreen frontman being under no pressure to deliver.

Dax McCarty argues Cristiano Ronaldo has no excuse to fall short at the 2026 FIFA World Cup given Portugal's world-class midfield.

Cristiano Ronaldo has won virtually everything there is to win in football, and yet one glaring absence continues to define how history measures him. The 41-year-old Portugal superstar striker is set to appear in his sixth World Cup this summer in search of the only trophy he hasn’t won yet.
Ronaldo arrives in North America with arguably the most talented squad he has ever led. That combination of an elite supporting cast and the possibility that it could be his last World Cup is exactly what prompted former USMNT midfielder Dax McCarty to put Ronaldo squarely on notice during a recent appearance on “First Things First” alongside Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, and Kevin Wildes.

The average age of their starting XI against Ghana in their final group game — 30 years 94 days — was their second-oldest for a World Cup match, only beaten by their side that won the third-place play-off 2-1 against the Netherlands at France 1998 (30 years 126 days).
As a nation, they have recent tournament pedigree too. They have reached the knockout stage in each of the last three World Cups, after only doing so once in their first four appearances at the tournament: that thi…

He was never a crack like Messi or

He looked for alternatives. Players like Messi, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, and Maradona already know where the ball will be; Cristiano doesn’t.
He was a player who chased situations to turn himself into a crack.

Portugal's last dance with Ronaldo at the World Cup - Türkiye Today
At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo is about to play in his sixth FIFA World Cup as Portugal heads to North America for the 2026 tournament with one of its strongest squads ever.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is still the team’s captain and main leader under coach Roberto Martinez, even as people keep debating whether he helps or holds back the team.
Ronaldo is the top men’s international goalscorer with 143 goals, including 25 in 30 games under Martinez. The coach says Ronaldo deserves his spot, highlighting Portugal’s 2025 Nations League win as proof.
Ronaldo scored against Spain in the final, earning his third international trophy after Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League.
The team around Ronaldo is strong. Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United set a new Premier League assists record this season, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Nuno Mendes are seen as some of the best in Europe. Still, some wonder if Portugal plays better when their captain is not on the field.
Fernandes spoke about this in December, telling Canal 11, "I know what people think, that it's clear we play better without Ronaldo, …

New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): Thierry Henry believes Cristiano Ronaldo has nothing left to prove despite Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 exit, describing the veteran forward’s legacy as “untouchable” following what was confirmed to be his final appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Portugal bowed out of the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, bringing an end to Ronaldo’s sixth and final World Cup campaign. Before the match, the 41-year-old had announced that the ongoing edition would be his last at the global showpiece, though he stopped short of confirming whether he would retire from international football.
Reflecting on Ronaldo’s career, Henry praised not only the Portugal captain’s achievements but also the professionalism and longevity that have made him an inspiration across generations.
“He’s not going to need anybody to define his legacy; his legacy is untouchable. Whatever he’s going to decide, I wish him all the best. I wish he can pass 1,000 goals. He inspired a lot of generation kids, especially with the way he breathes, lives and thinks football,” Henry said on …

Yoanne Wissa’s emphatic header proved pivotal as the Democratic Republic of the Congo earned their first-ever FIFA World Cup point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Portugal in Houston.
On a night he became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match, Cristiano Ronaldo failed to live up to the matchday-one goalscoring heights of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
Ronaldo fired a blank in the Group K opener and Selecao das Quinas left Texas with just one point, despite taking a sixth-minute lead when Joao Neves headed in from an inviting Pedro Neto cross.
At that moment, Portugal, among the favourites to win the competition, were confident they could go on to win the game comfortably.
But DR Congo had other ideas, reacting superbly and showing great bravery to press high, stopping Portugal from developing any rhythm whatsoever.
Wissa equalised with the last touch of the first half and you can’t say it wasn’t deserved, as DR Congo netted as a result of a pinpoint Arthur Masuaku cross from a cl…

The air outside BMO Field was thick with the nervous energy that only a World Cup knockout match can summon. Fans draped in red and green sang for their hero. Yet, just hours before Portugal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in the round of 32, the loudest noise came not from the terraces, but from the concrete concourse outside the stadium. It was here that Kátia Aveiro, sister to

With 2026 approaching, it might be Ronaldo’slast real chance to win football’s biggest prize. He’s already done almost everything else in the game. He has won major trophies with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus. Moreover, he has collected five Ballon d’Or awards along the way.
The World Cup is the exception. Since his debut in 2006, when Portugal reached the semi-finals, it has brought more disappointment than success. There have been early exits, close calls, and moments that slipped away.
At international level, though, he continued to deliver. He captained Portugal to victory at Euro 2016. He later won the 2019 Nations League, proving he could lead his country to major honours.
Even now, playing for Al Nassr FC and Portugal, he remains a decisive presence. His game has changed, but his impact hasn’t—he plays more centrally now. He relies on movement, timing, and finishing rather than pace.

Portugal begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey against DR Congo in Houston on Wednesday, but much of the discussion among fans remains centered around whether the 41-year-old still deserves to be the first name on the team sheet.
The doubts surrounding Ronaldo's role did not emerge overnight. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar proved to be one of the most challenging international tournaments of his career. Ronaldo managed just one goal, a penalty in the group stage, before frustrations became public when he reacted angrily to being substituted during Portugal's defeat to South Korea.
The fallout was significant.

Cristiano Ronaldo breaks down in tears as final FIFA World Cup ends in ...
Cristiano Ronaldo was in tears as Portugal crashed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, losing to Spain 0-1 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 showdown. It also turned out to be Ronaldo's final World Cup game. The Al Nassr star had revealed before the match that this would be his final World Cup.
Spain's substitute Mikel Merino scored a late winner in the 91st minute. Extra time looked certain before Ferran Torres sent a through ball to Merino, who slotted it past Costa with ease.
Both goalkeepers were in good form. Unai Simon stretched his record shutout streak to 609 minutes. Spain also broke its tie with Italy (1990) and Switzerland (2006-10) for the most consecutive World Cup games not conceding a goal.
Before the Portugal game, Simon had only made four saves in this World Cup. In the Round of 32, Austria didn't register a single shot on target. In the Round of 16 showdown vs Portugal, he had to deny Ronaldo twice.
