When the clock ticked past 95 minutes and Ghana's World Cup opener appeared destined to end in frustration, Caleb Yirenkyi produced the moment that transformed anxiety into celebration.
The young midfielder struck deep into stoppage time to hand the Black Stars a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Toronto, giving Ghana a priceless three points and an early boost in the race for qualification.
For long periods, Panama looked capable of frustrating Carlos Queiroz's side and perhaps even stealing a victory of their own. Instead, Ghana's persistence, defensive discipline and refusal to settle for a draw were rewarded with a winning goal that could prove decisive in their World Cup campaign.
The result leaves Ghana level on points with England, who defeated Croatia 4-2 earlier in the group, while Panama and Croatia remain without a point after the opening round of matches.

Ghana’s fans and players celebrated wildly as Caleb Yirenkyi finished a sweeping counterattack with a tap-in goal in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to give the team a last-gasp win over Panama in both teams’ opening World Cup match in rainy Toronto.
The goal was followed by a melee before the referee blew the full-time whistle, sealing a 1-0 victory in the Group L match on Wednesday.
After Ghana quickly moved the play from their own half, Brandon Thomas-Asante drove the ball into the 18-yard box down the left flank, rolled a pass towards the middle for Yirenkyi to redirect into the net.
The second half was in complete contrast to the very quiet first half.
The teams picked up the tempo in the second half, but scoring chances remained minimal until the decisive play.
Panama were the superior team before half-time, while Ghana dictated more of the play after the interval.

In a match that seemed destined for a goalless stalemate, Ghana's youngest player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Caleb Yirenkyi, etched his name into Black Stars folklore with a dramatic 95th-minute winner that secured a 1-0 victory over Panama at BMO Field and ended a six-game winless streak.
For 94 minutes, the torrential rain that soaked Toronto mirrored the frustration on the faces of Ghanaian players and fans alike.
The Black Stars, missing the influential Thomas Partey and the injured Mohammed Kudus, laboured to break down a resolute Panamanian defence, failing to muster a single shot on target in the entire first half.
Panama, chasing their first-ever World Cup point, grew in confidence and came closest to breaking the deadlock when Cecilio Waterman forced a sharp save from Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi inside the opening two minutes.
The match was punctuated by a hydration break that drew loud boos from the rain-drenched supporters, adding to the surreal atmosphere.
Ati-Zigi, who had been Ghana's busiest player, was forced off at half-time after a heavy collision, with Benjamin Asare of Hearts…
