Charles De Ketelaere #17 of Belgium celebrates after scoring his team's second goal during the World Cup Round of 16 match against the United States on Monday in Seattle.
SEATTLE — This time was supposed to be different.
The U.S. men's national team came into this FIFA World Cup with a lineup full of players with key roles in Europe's top leagues. They had the name-brand coach — Mauricio Pochettino, of Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea fame. And they had homefield advantage, with every game on U.S. soil for the first time in three decades.
For weeks, the hype seemed like it might be real: The team's three wins over Paraguay, Australia and Bosnia-Herzegovina were the most ever by a U.S. men's squad in a World Cup. A new generation of American fans filled stadiums by the tens of thousands and tuned in on TV by the tens of millions.
But in the end, the Americans' exit was the same as it eve…

SEATTLE -- For almost a month, theUnited Statesmen's national team showed the best version of itself. It played with aggression, passion, and even some flair. The team was flying high. And then, on the biggest stage yet at thisFIFA World Cup, in front of a capacity home crowd, the USMNT crashed to earth, delivering its worst performance in recent memory, falling to an inspiredBelgiumside4-1.
There was nothing lucky or fortunate about Belgium's win. The Red Devils were dominant in all facets for 90 minutes, overwhelming the U.S. midfield and positively dunking on the American backline. In fact, had the U.S. not scored from a deflectedMalik Tillmanfree kick in the 30th minute, the tournament co-hosts wouldn't have been in the game at all. The game could have been settled by halftime had Belgium converted some clear chances.

It was also missing two of its best-known players inKevin De BruyneandJérémy Doku-- who were supposed to be critical components but weren't missed at all. Folarin Balogun
affair. The Red Devils, angered by FIFA’s decision to reinstate the U.S. striker after he received a red card in the previous round, delighted in trolling their hosts during and after the match.

Usually, we like to look forward in this newsletter, but the events of the last 48 or so hours really require us to look back at what might be one of the worst periods for American soccer in its history.
In the hours from the moment that
FIFA announced Folarin Balogun would be eligible to play
against Belgium to the final whistle
ending a 4-1 thrashing
at the hands of the Belgians, the US went from a fun story facing an uphill battle to much of the globe celebrating American humiliation on the biggest stage.
Many neutrals will say it’s justice done (or, in the parlance of American sports fans, “ball don’t lie”). American fans will rue the fact that such a feel-good story ended in embarrassment on and off the field as a US president who loves the spot…

Belgium routs US, but FIFA's political capitulation to White House overshadows the game
Belgium's 4-1 win ended the US World Cup run, but FIFA's politically driven reversal of striker Balogun's suspension, enabled by White House pressure, exposed deep governance failures and set a damaging precedent that overshadowed the match.

'Overturn this': Belgium's savage post after crushing USA to reach WC quarter-finals
Belgium defeated the United States 4-1 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16. The Belgian Red Devils posted social media messages after their emphatic victory. One post sarcastically referenced Folarin Balogun's overturned suspension. Another post humorously addressed the football versus soccer debate. This loss ended the United States' World Cup campaign.

Belgium thrash USA 4-1 to advance to World Cup 2026 quarterfinals
A packed Seattle Stadium fell silent on Tuesday as co-hosts USA were sent crashing out of the FIFA World Cup 2026, suffering a crushing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16.
Belgium, the 2018 World Cup bronze medalists, cruised into the quarterfinals and now set up a clash with Spain for a place in the last four.
The Red Devils were clearly the superior side, registering nine more shots on target and producing a significantly higher expected goals (xG) tally than their overwhelmed opponents. The Americans had no answer to Belgium’s relentless attacking runs, as goals from Charles De Ketelaere, Hans Vanaken, and Romelu Lukaku resulted in a thoroughly dominant display.
