Confirmed: Petrol to hit cheapest level since 2022 this week - News24
Confirmed: Petrol to hit cheapest level since 2022 this week - News24 04 Jan The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has confirmed large fuel price cuts that will take effect on Wednesday. Unleaded 93 petrol will be lowered by 62c per litre, while unleaded 95 will be reduced by 66c to R19.92 on the coast and R20.75 in Gauteng, the first time it will fall below R21 since early 2022. The wholesale prices of diesel will fall by between R1.37 and R1.50 a litre, depending on the sulphur content. The wholesale price of diesel will be lowered to around R18.42 in Gauteng and R17.59 on the coast. Local fuel prices are determined in part by the cost of oil and the rand-dollar exchange rate, as oil is priced in dollar. The average Brent oil price fell from $63.55 a barrel to $61.47 over the past month. “The main contributing factor is the oversupply of oil in the market due to increased production by OPEC+ and non-OPEC producers,” the department said in a statement. The rand strengthened to R16.85/$ over the past month, from R17.22 last month, as it benefitted from a bleeding dollar. Investors have been selling dollars amid mounting forecasts for US interest rate cuts.Lower…

South Africa's Cheaper Petrol Masks a Looming Gas Gap
South Africa's Cheaper Petrol Masks a Looming Gas Gap Share Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Pinterest Email South Africans are once again seeing relief at the pump, with the latest fuel price cuts delivering the cheapest petrol in roughly four years. The reductions – around 65 cents per liter for petrol and more than 50 cents for diesel – continue a downward trend that began earlier in 2026, when falling crude prices and currency strength combined to lower pump prices nationwide. While the immediate benefits are tangible – cheaper transport, easing inflationary pressure and support for businesses – the underlying drivers reveal a more fragile reality. South Africa’s fuel costs remain shaped primarily by global oil markets and exchange-rate movements rather than domestic energy resilience. Currency dynamics are particularly influential. The rand strengthened sharply through 2025, gaining nearly 13% against the U.S. dollar – its best annual performance in more than a decade – supported by improved fiscal sentiment and rising commodity prices. This momentum has continued into 2026 with periodic surges in precious-metal prices and global risk appetite. These shifts can lower refined-fuel im…

Here's how much petrol and diesel could drop in July - TimesLIVE
Here's how much petrol and diesel could drop in July - TimesLIVE Thanks to steadily declining oil prices and a strengthening rand, which was trading at about R16.20 to the US dollar at the time of writing, South African motorists can look forward to paying less at the pumps in July. According to the latest daily data published by the Central Energy Fund , the price of 93-octane petrol is projected to decrease by about R2.68/ l , while 95-octane petrol is expected to drop by about R2.65/ l . Diesel users stand to benefit even more, with the wholesale price of 50ppm diesel currently forecast to decline by R4.67/ l and 500ppm diesel by about R4.33/ l . There is, however, an important caveat. In an effort to ease pressure on consumers, the National Treasury and department of mineral and petroleum resources introduced a temporary R3/ l reduction in the general fuel levy on petrol and diesel in April, while diesel received additional relief of R3.93/ l in May. That relief package was reduced by 50% in June, with the remaining portion set to fall away entirely next month. As a result, R1.50/ l will be added back to petrol prices in July, while diesel prices will increase by a further R1.…

Fuel-price forecast points to a mixed bag in June - Explain
Fuel-price forecast points to a mixed bag in June - Explain | |Follow us on Google News South African motorists will have a mixed experience at the pumps next month. It’s a little confusing: early fuel-price forecasts point to lower prices for both petrol and diesel. But the end of the temporary fuel tax relief the government introduced for April and May means the price motorists pay for petrol will probably rise. People driving diesel vehicles will likely have it easier: they can expect a slight decrease, even after accounting for the end of the tax relief. Over the past decade, global crises have repeatedly triggered sharp increases in petrol and diesel prices in South Africa, pushing up transport costs, food prices, and the overall cost of living. The reason is simple: South Africa imports most of its crude oil and refined fuel. That means local fuel prices are heavily influenced by international markets. When wars or supply disruptions hit major oil-producing regions, global oil prices rise, and South Africans feel it at the pumps. During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, global demand collapsed, and oil prices briefly fell to about $20 (R329,47) a barrel, helping push local…

South Africa: Petrol May Be Getting Cheaper Next Month but Will Your ... If you take a taxi to work every day, you already know how this goes. Fuel prices go up and your fare goes up with them. Fuel prices come down and your fare stays exactly where it is. Petrol is heading down. The question is whether you will feel it. Keep up with the latest headlines onWhatsApp|LinkedIn The US and Iran struck a peace deal on Sunday, ending three months of fighting that had pushed oil prices sharply higher around the world. Global oil prices dropped more than 4% on Monday. That is a big move in a single day. South Africa's fuel price is calculated every month using international oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate. The numbers that feed into next month's calculation have been building toward a cut for weeks. Petrol 95 is currently tracking a drop of more than R2 a litre for July. Diesel is tracking an even bigger cut. Monday's oil price crash had not yet been added to that calculation, which means the final figure could be larger. On a 50-litre tank, a R2 cut saves a taxi owner around R128 each fill. A minibus taxi that fills up several times a week would save several hundred ra…
