WASHINGTON (TNND) —Governments around the world are moving to restrict children’s access to social media, and the United Kingdom is now the latest country to propose a ban for minors under 16.
Australia became the first country to ban in place in December. Canada is sending a similar measure to its parliament. (TNND)
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the proposal is aimed at addressing what many parents describe as harmful and addictive online behavior among children.
“Thousands of parents say their children are addicted to social media,” Starmer said in his announcement of the proposed ban. “It can leave them trapped in a cycle of endless scrolling that displaces play, sleep, and time with the family. It can harm their mental health. And frankly, parents need our support on this.”

Sir Keir confirmed the plans at a press conference at Downing Street on Monday, June 15, sharing: "The government will ban access to social media for all children under the age of 16."
He said: “This is not something I do lightly, and I will not present it as cost-free, as if social media has brought no benefits to young people, because clearly that is wrong.
“But government is always about choices, and it’s clear to me that a full ban is the right choice.

A schoolgirl has gone viral after delivering a brutally honest one-line response to SirKeir Starmer's plans to ban under-16s from social media.
The teenager leftBBC Breakfastviewers in stitches when she was asked how she would spend her free time if she could no longer access her favourite apps.
Without missing a beat, Isabella replied: 'Stare at a wall.'
Her deadpan answer quickly spread across social media, with viewers hailing the pupil as an 'icon' and declaring they were 'howling' at her reaction.
The exchange came after Sir Keir announced on Monday that under-16s would be banned from accessing social media platforms under plans designed to protect young people's wellbeing and safety online.
If approved by Parliament, the restrictions would come into force by spring 2027.
Unveiling the proposals, the Prime Minister said the move would give children more opportunities away from screens.

Prime minister expected to unveil ‘Australia plus’ ban for under-16s on apps such as TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat

Good morning. In Downing Street officials reportedly refuse to talk about Keir Starmer wanting to establish a legacy. But it is hard for the rest of us to avoid the word, particularly on a morning when he has summoned reporters to Downing Street for an 8am press conference on his plans for a social media ban. In lobby terms, this counts as unconscionably early. The announcement could easily wait. But Starmer is heading to France for the G7 summit later, that will keep him busy until Wednesday night, and on Thursday it’s the Makerfield byelection. This is an annoucement that Starmer is determined to make before then because Andy Burnham seems on course to become an MP in the early hours of Friday and at that point UK politics may start to change drastically – and Starmer’s window for legacy making may swiftly close.

Last summer the UK government showed little interest in following the Australian government when it announced<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/…

LONDON/DUBLIN: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on June 15 that he plans to ban social media for children under 16 and place limits on gaming and live-streaming platforms. This move is part of a strong push against big tech and goes further than any country has so far.
In nearby Ireland, the government is considering a similar ban on under-16s, but would prefer to act at the European Union level. Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris supported Starmer's plan, calling social media a major public health risk today.
Starmer said these wide-ranging changes would "give kids their childhood back." The rules would apply to platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and X, as well as gaming sites where strangers can contact children. However, messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal would not be included.

WASHINGTON (TNND) —Democratic Project 2029 calls for a social media ban for children under the age of 16.
The proposal is titled “Kids over Clicks”and it discusses the mental health issues from social media that have impacted minors the most.
This comes after the United Kingdom proposed a social media ban for minors under 16.
The Australian governmentrecently passed a law that mandates children have to be at least 16 to get a social media account.
The “Kids over Clicks” proposal states that while technology has benefited the American people, it has also caused harm to minors throughcyberbullyingand social media addiction.
“Lawmakers should ban social media platforms from opening accounts for children up to age 16. By keeping the youngest users off these platforms entirely, this approach buys time for adolescent brains to develop the cognitive defenses needed to navigate platforms built around addictive design,” the proposal states.

The social media ban for under-16s is not a “silver bullet”, the Technology Secretary acknowledged as she faced a backlash from firms which will be hit by the restriction.
The minister responsible, Liz Kendall, accepted that many children will succeed in getting around the ban but insisted the restriction would lead to a “significant change in behaviour”.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of social media platform X, said the ban was indefensible and amounted to censorship.
Other social media firms cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Australian-style measures the UK Government hopes to introduce by spring next year.

Leading social media companies have cast doubt on the effectiveness of Sir Keir Starmer’s social media ban for under-16s.
The Prime Minister announced the ban in response to concerns social media is unsafe, making children miserable and could cause lasting damage to their mental health.
The restrictions, set to be passed by Christmas and in place by spring next year, will leave technology firms, rather than children, liable for enforcement action if they fail to comply.
The plans are modelled on a similar ban in Australia, but the Government has aimed to learn from the mistakes of the restrictions imposed there, and has gone further with new limits aimed at preventing children from speaking to strangers while gaming online.

Leading tech firms spoke up against Sir Keir’s plans following the anno…

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he will ban social media sites for the under-16s and impose restrictions on gaming and livestreaming platforms, in some of the most far-reaching online restrictions to date globally.
Starmer said on Monday he would introduce sweeping changes to social media regulation to better protect the wellbeing of children when they are online.
"It is clear to me a full ban is the right choice," he said, adding that while it would not be easy, the government had agency in pushing back against the power of big technology companies.
Britain has increasingly toughened its approach to tech companies in recent years, urging or forcing them to impose age verification, adapt their algorithms and, most recently, prevent children from circulating nude images taken on mobile phones.
But with a growing awareness of the mental health risks posed by children spending too much time online, Starmer has decided to go further after speaking to parents and considering evidence from Australia, which brought in a ban for under 16s last year.

Under-16s in the UK could be banned from using social media by spring next year in what has been hailed a “watershed moment for child protection”.
Bereaved parents and child safety campaigners welcomed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement as a necessity for young people who they say are exposed to harmful content online.
But some big tech firms have hit back, saying a blanket ban on social media for under-16s could drive them into unregulated online spaces.
Sitting with the other bereaved parents, we all did shed a tear
Some online safety campaigners have also expressed doubt, with the Molly Rose Foundation claiming it could be “unenforceable” and that the Prime Minister had chosen “not to follow the evidence but take the politically expedient option instead”.
The foundation, set up in memory of 14-year-old Molly Russell, who took her own life in 2017 after viewing harmful content online, suggested a ban might fail to address what it describes as “fundamental product safety issues” such as harmful and distressing content being pus…

Technology Secretary Ms Kendall told the BBC: “I’ve never thought that the ban will be a complete silver bullet.

Starmer told a news conference that he will fight back if technology companies resist the move, and acknowledged some teens would try to find their way around a ban. But he said he is “not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children”.

He said a full ban is the right decision and believes it will make children safer and happier, while giving them more time, security, and freedom to grow. Britain will follow a model similar to Australia, which introduced a ban in December.
The UK will also block harmful features, such as live streaming and …

AI “romantic companion” chatbots will have to enforce a minimum age of 18 and under-16s will be banned from live-streaming themselves and from making contact with strangers, including on gaming platforms. YouTube was among the first companies to criticise the ban. A spokesperson said: “YouTube is a vital resource for young people, educators and parents. Blanket bans push kids out of such curated, supervised, beneficial experiences, and towards anonymous, less safe services.”

Technology Secretary Ms Kendall told the BBC: “I’ve never thought that the ban will be a complete silver bullet.

Major new online safety reforms mean children under 16 will soon be banned from using social media.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced under 16s will be banned from a range of social media platforms in a "big moment for our country" at a Downing Street press conference this morning (June 15).
The move comes in response to overwhelming support during a government consultation, which found that 91% of parents backed raising the minimum age for social media access to 16 in the UK.

What would you do if you were suddenly ousted from the world of social media? For one teenager from Britain, the choice is clear: stare at a wall.
The United Kingdom (UK)’s decision to ban social media for those less than 16 years of age is leading to a flood of reactions. But one of them has caught the fancy of the internet. When UK’s national public broadcaster, the BBC, reached out to gauge the reaction of under-16s to the social media ban, which is set to come into effect in early 2027, one school student expressed disbelief.
“I didn’t think it would actually happen. I did believe he [UK PM Keir Starmer, who announced the government’s decision] would chicken out and give it more time, a little more consideration. But, he seems pretty sure of it and I am not sure if I agree with him,” the bespectacled student wearing a school uniform said in the video that is now going viral.
The student said they spent nearly nine hours on social media platforms daily. So what would they do to fill all the time they will have after the social media ban, the news show presenter asked.
