Media freedom groups condemn attacks on migrants and threats to journalists
Amid increasing calls for unlawful action against foreign nationals and growing fears of violence ahead of the self-imposed June 30 deadline set byMarch and Marchand its allies, a coalition of media freedom organisations is warning of increasing threats both to those being targeted and to journalists reporting on these developments.
Recent protests and incidents of violence – including assaults and the killing of Mishack Banda, a 29-year-old Malawian father, in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, June 19 – have heightened concerns about the risk of wider unrest. At the same time, journalists documenting these events have been threatened, physically intimidated and obstructed in their work. In some cases, reporters covering these protests have faced demands that they delete their footage, attempts to seize their equipment, and been threatened with violence for documenting attacks.

South Africa: More Than a Dozen South African Journalists Targeted As Anti-Migrant Deadline Looms
[CPJ] South African journalist Sakhiseni Nxumalo was reporting on an anti-migrant march, which turned into a deadly attack on foreign nationals, when he himself became a target because of his dark skin. He is one of at least 15 journalists targeted in South Africa in recent months, CPJ's reporting found.

Africa: CPJ Intensifies Push Against Attacks on Journalists
As the world marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, concerns over media safety remain high. Speaking during the November 2 commemoration, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of rising violence, arbitrary arrests, and targeted killings of journalists worldwide.
In Francophone Africa, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is echoing the alarm. The organisation is calling for stronger protections and accountability as attacks on media workers continue to rise.
Moussa Ngom, a CPJ representative, is urging governments to safeguard press freedom, stressing that impunity only fuels further violence against journalists.

The coalition – comprising Amnesty International South Africa, the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP), Campaign for Free Expression, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Media Diversity & Development Agency (MDDA), Moxii Africa, the Press Council of South Africa, and the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF), condemned intimidation and violence in the strongest terms.
Recent unrest has already claimed lives, including the killing of 29‑year‑old Malawian father Mishack Banda in Pietermaritzburg on 19 June.
The tragic killing of Banda sharpened concerns over potential widespread violence and unrest.
Journalists covering these events have also faced harassment, threats, and demands to delete footage. March and March have even used social media to identify reporters, encourag…

It said March and March had used social media to identify journalists and encourage supporters to do the same in a blatant attempt to intimidate and silence independent reporting.
