The Russian foreign minister has shared his views on NATO expansion and EU militarization, including in the nuclear sphere, and the threat this poses to global security
The pro-establishment, Brussels-based publication Politico Europe, owned by Germany's Axel Springer SE, has refused to publish an exclusive article written by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Lavrov's article was initially planned for publication in the Brussels-based Politico Europe, but due to a "last-minute decision by the outlet's editorial team," the publication was canceled, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
In the article, Russia's highly experienced top diplomat outlined Moscow's view of the Ukrainian conflict, Europe's role in escalating the crisis, and the broader implications for global security. Lavrov accused European leaders of using diplomacy as a cover for NATO and EU expansion, while arguing that the West has sought to turn Ukraine into an anti-Russian foothold. He also warned that the EU's growing militarization, including discussions about nuclear deterrence and "strategic autonomy," could increase the risk of a direct confrontation between N…

UKRAINE engaged diplomatically WASHINGTON in Kyiv, Kyyiv, Misto, Ukraine
The European Union has reached out to Moscow in a tentative bid to open a line of communication so the continent is not sidelined in any potential talks to end Russia's grinding war in Ukraine, officials said Thursday.
The news emerged as Ukraine launched one of its biggest drone attacks since Russia's all-out invasion of its neighbor more than four years ago, Russian officials said Thursday. A major Moscow oil refinery was hit for a second time in a week and commercial flights at Moscow airports were disrupted.
Against the backdrop of conflict, the EU has been quietly seeking to reopen communications with Moscow even as it doubles down on its support for Kyiv. Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, has tried to cut out Europe and Kyiv and negotiate Ukraine's future with Washington.
"In the past few weeks, brief contacts were made at diplomatic level to open communication channels but nothing was discussed on substance," an EU official with knowledge of the approach said on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive move. A second official, also speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media on the matter, confirmed the Russi…

Lavrov: Europe seeks to derail Anchorage deal
15 June 2026 20:52 (UTC+04:00)
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday that
European countries are trying to persuade United States President
Donald Trump not to follow through on agreements reached with
Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Anchorage summit,
AzerNEWS
reports.
According to Lavrov, European leaders traveled to Washington
after the meeting and sought to convince Trump to "deviate" from
the course discussed with Putin. He added that Moscow still expects
the Anchorage agreements to be implemented, describing them as a
potential first step toward ending the conflict in Ukraine,
particularly because "its key components were proposed by the
United States and President Trump, and accepted by President
Putin."
Lavrov also said Trump reaffirmed during a phone call with Putin
on Sunday that he was interested in helping find a "fair, long-term
solution" to the Ukraine crisis. Following the Anchorage summit in
August 2025, Putin said the conflict in Ukraine "could be brought
to an end."

The office of EU chief António Costa has had "brief" diplomatic contacts with the Kremlin to open channels of communication, Brussels said Wednesday, as Europe debates whether to talk to Russia about ending the Ukraine war.
"In the past few weeks, brief contacts at diplomatic level were made to open communication channels but nothing was discussed on substance," an EU official said on condition of anonymity.
Discussions on Europe re-engaging with Moscow have become louder amid deadlocked U.S. efforts to halt the war in Ukraine while President Donald Trump's attention has been consumed by Iran.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky — who is due to join EU leaders at a summit in Brussels Thursday — has pushed for Europe to play a more active role.
"In any future scenario, the EU has specific interests that will need to be defended, therefore it is important to have established diplomatic channels with Russia," the EU official said.
"The EU is not a mediator. It supports Ukraine in its efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace."
The official said that European Counc…

Resuming top level contacts with Moscow would be a significant shift and a signal that Europe fears it will be cut out of talks that have major implications for the security of the Continent.
The

Privately, there is concern at the highest levels of European politics that Washington and Moscow may agree a deal and put pressure on Kyiv to accept it.

According to reporting this week, some European Union countries are
resisting calls
to set up a direct negotiation channel with Russia, amid fears that the Kremlin will exploit any dialog to divide the continent. Although French President Emmanuel Macron has
acknowledged
that France has opened up “technical-level” dialog channels with Russia, few other countries wish to follow suit.
This concern is understandable, but Europe is now heading into the fifth year of the Ukraine War with a dangerous imbalance. Nato’s deterrent posture is

For months, European leaders have
lamented
being shut out of US-Russia negotiations over Ukraine’s future,

By negotiating directly with the Kremlin, the Trump administration has broken the taboo on diplomatic contacts with Russia. With Ukrainian and European security at stake, is it time for Brussels to open its own communication channel to Moscow?
Assistant Professor, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute
Yes, of course Europe should be negotiating with Russia—but not just for the sake of peace at any price. The EU needs a strategy to get a seat at the table precisely because Moscow doesn’t want it there. The aim should be to weaken the Kremlin, keep Russia in the hole it dug for itself, and deter it from ever threatening European security again.
That means two things. First, Europe should be in the room to make life difficult for Russia—not to trade away Ukrainian territory or sovereignty, but to insist on certain conditions: no sanctions relief without verifiable withdrawal, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Second, Brussels should openly offer to relieve the United States of the responsibility of negotiating with Russia, something many in Washington see as a distraction.…

The office of European Council President Antonio Costa has established limited diplomatic contacts with the Kremlin in recent weeks as the bloc explores reopening communication channels with Moscow, the Financial Times reported on June 17.
The contacts come as European leaders increasingly discuss how and when to re-engage directly with Russia over its war against Ukraine after years of diplomatic isolation. EU officials are also keen to ensure the bloc has a seat at the table in any future

over ending the war and shaping the future of European security.

The Kremlin on Thursday accused European countries of prioritizing military buildup over peace efforts, as top Western military officials gathered in Britain to discuss support for Ukraine.
Major European powers, including France and the U.K., have sought to ramp up defense spending since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, amid growing concerns that Washington may scale back its commitment to European security.
With Trump forging closer ties with Russia, the Kremlin has increasingly blamed Europe for prolonging the war in Ukraine, accusing the EU and U.K. of obstructing peace.
“For the most part, the signals from Brussels and European capitals concern plans to militarize Europe,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“Europe has embarked on a path of militarization and has turned itself into something of a war party,” he added.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who alongside French President Emmanuel Macron is leading efforts to form a so-called “coalition of the willing,” is expected to address a gathering of around 30 military officials late…

The office of European Council President Antonio Costa has made "brief contacts at diplomatic level" with the Kremlin in recent weeks "to open communication channels", an EU official said on Wednesday.
"Nothing was discussed on substance," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "In any future scenario, the EU has specific interests that will need to be defended, therefore it is important to have established diplomatic channels with Russia." The official added: "The EU is not a mediator. It supports Ukraine in its efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace."

Should the EU maintain diplomatic channels with Russia?
The Prime Minister recalled his previous statement, in which he asserted that diplomatic channels with Russia are meaningless as long as Moscow rejects diplomacy. “There must be clear signals that Russia is ready for this. Today, there are no such signs,” he said.
The issue of relations with Russia was discussed among European leaders on Thursday. Kulbergs added that
no member state should maintain trade relations with Moscow
. “I know this is very difficult because the economy is feeling the impact of the war. It is hard to balance everything, but we must maintain economic growth and competitiveness in Europe,” the Prime Minister stated.
Andris Kulbergs has held the office of Prime Minister of Latvia since May of this year. The previous government of Evika Siliņa collapsed as a result of repeated incidents involving Ukrainian drones falling on the country’s territory.

Russia said it was open to dialogue with European countries but would not accept ultimatums, as signs increase that the EU may seek talks with Moscow after largely shunning contacts since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said common sense dictated the need for such contacts because of the "enormous number" of complex issues on the agenda, but he said the Europeans needed to change their approach to Russia.
"The Europeans have a very serious misconception: They assume that negotiations with Russia must be conducted from a position of strength and based on Russia's weakness. This is the biggest mistake ... Such talk will lead nowhere," he told reporters.
"Does this stem from European incompetence, misinformation, or stupidity? We don't know for sure, but it's a fact."
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he is open to talks with European governments but that they should make the first move because the…
