The team from India could not beat its competitors from Asia because of poor performance during key matches.
How FIFA World Cup Qualification Works
Each continent has its own qualifying procedure for the

In the case of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there were more qualifying slots allocated to the Asian continent since the tournament was increased from 32 to 48 teams. However, the competition was still tough due to cou…

On the night of March 8, sports lovers were out on the streets of Kerala just as anywhere else in the country, celebrating India's triumph in the T20 World Cup. For the country obsessed with cricket, where players are household names, and sometimes revered as highly as Gods, such euphoria was natural.
Just three months later, the streets of Kerala have come alive again. This time, the occasion is the FIFA World Cup, and the intensity is amped up.
There are parades and carnivals, houses are painted in the shades of Brazil and Argentina, vehicles are given a graphic makeover with Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo adorning bonnets and fuel tanks, and young women and men have casually slipped into cheap polyester jerseys and intend to remain in those for at least a month.
But why?
During the T20 World Cup, there was the collective purpose of national pride at stake. Moreover, every corner of the country had its own selfish reasons. For us Malayalis, it was Sanju Samson.
But what does the FIFA Worl…

From club conflicts to grassroots failures, Indian football’s struggles explain why the nation still cannot reach the World Cup.
"What is required is proper talent scouting"
Every FIFA World Cup, questions surround India and its continued absence from football’s biggest stage.
It is a debate that resurfaces as the tournament unfolds and global attention shifts to nations that have found a way to compete at the highest level.
The nation has only qualified once, in 1950. However, they withdrew due to a combination of travel costs, lack of preparation and the federation’s decision to prioritise the Olympic Games.
The diaspora is enjoying a presence at the 2026 World Cup, withSarpreet Singhstarting for New Zealand.
It is a sharp reminder that representation is not limited to traditional football powers. Instead, it is built through systems, pathways and sustained development over time.
India’s absence continues to stand out not because of a lack of interest, but because of unresolved structuralgapsthat remain unchanged.
The answers lie across governance, grassroots development and the way the domestic game is organised.

On October 9, 2017, when India faced Colombia in the FIFA U-17 World Cup at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Jeakson Singh etched his name in history by scoring India’s first-ever goal in a
FIFA World Cup
. The stadium erupted in celebration. However, the joy was short-lived, as Colombia equalised almost immediately and eventually went on to win the match 2–1.
But that fleeting moment of ecstasy, when the whole stadium burst into euphoria and there was deafening applause, felt more like a big IPL match or any other major cricket fixture in India. In the crowd, countless fans cheered for the Indian team, many wearing the team’s T-shirts. The moment felt surreal, as India was playing in the FIFA World Cup. But nearly a decade on, where do we stand now? In a nation of over 1.4 billion people, why have we still not been able to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, even as the tournament now features 48 teams?
Like every FIFA World Cup cycle, the question returns to the forefront as excitement builds across living rooms, social media and TV studios. The debate reignites as fans spin hopeful scenarios, whi…

The familiar lament that Indian football fans have learnt to live with has returned after the World Cup kicked off last week.
For followers of the Blue Tigers, as the Indian men's national team is known, the question is one of the sport's great cliches.
India has never progressed beyond the preliminary rounds of the Asian zone qualifiers, yet the World Cup is celebrated with fervour in football-mad states such as West Bengal, Kerala and Goa.
A growing number of accredited Indian journalists cover the tournament on the ground despite their country having no stake in it.
The irony is not lost on those in the press box. A senior Indian football writer who has covered four World Cups told the BBC that colleagues frequently ask whether India even plays football, knowing the country only as a cricket-playing nation.
The British broadcaster noted that neighbouring China, the world's second-most populous country, has also failed to qualify for the tournament.
FIFA, however, remains acutely aware of these vital markets, prompting it…
