South Africa Migrant Exodus: 25,000 Depart Amid Anti-Migrant Sentiment
Johannesburg, South Africa– Approximately 25,000 foreign nationals have departed South Africa in recent weeks, following a surge in anti-migrant sentiment that hasreportedly resulted in four fatalities. This significant outflow of labor and residents underscores growing social tensions and presents a challenge to regional economic stability. The departures primarily affect individuals from neighboring countries, particularly Zimbabwe, who often seek economic opportunities in South Africa.
The reported exodus follows a period of heightened xenophobic incidents within South Africa, often targeting individuals from other African nations. These tensions are frequently exacerbated by high domestic unemployment rates and perceptions regarding resource allocation, as observed in various reports over the past decade by organizations such as the United Nations Refugee Agency.
Migrants often contribute significantly to sectors such as agriculture, mining, and informal trade in South Africa. Their departure can create labor shortages in specific niches, potentially impacting productivity and economic output, according t…

New AHRC Research Warns Xenophobia Has Evolved from Sporadic Violence into an Organized Human Rights Crisis
For decades, South Africa has stood as a symbol of hope on the African continent, a constitutional democracy born from the defeat of Apartheid and committed to equality, dignity, and human rights.
Today, the Rainbow Nation stands at a crossroads. As anti-foreigner mobilization intensifies and thousands flee in fear ahead of a June 30 deadline imposed by xenophobic movements, the constitutional promise of inclusion is being tested as never before.
As anti-foreigner movements intensify campaigns across the country and the deadline approaches for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa, human rights advocates are warning that the country may be approaching a dangerous tipping point.
The communities most immediately affected include nationals from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Somalia, and other African countries whose citizens have long sought work, safety, education, business opportunities, or refuge in South Afri…

[RFI] South Africa is once again facing a rise in anti-migrant tensions, with vigilante groups reportedly going door to door demanding that undocumented foreign nationals leave the country by the end of June. For decades, the West has told itself that the fear of immigrants is a matter of skin color, religion, culture, or different continents. But one only needs to look at South Africa today, where a new wave of xenophobic violence is demonstrating that the mechanism of rejecting the other isn’t always about phenotypes.
In a country where the Black majority suffered for decades
under the oppression of apartheid
– a system imposed by the white minority – mobs of Black South Africans with xenophobic views are accusing migrants and asylum seekers (who are also African and Black) of stealing their jobs, overwhelming hospitals, monopolizing public aid and committing crimes.
The violence has left hundreds of homes burned, thousands of displaced people camped out in the streets, as well as several migrants murdered. The most recent case occurred on June 19, when a 29-year-old Malawian man was stoned to death in the …

South Africa: Refugees affected by xenophobic attacks forced to sleep outside police station
Xenophobic violence and displacement are escalating across South Africa as tensions over foreign nationals boil over. In Mossel Bay, two Mozambicans were killed and dozens of homes torched in informal settlements, in attacks residents have linked to ethnic targeting – leaving hundreds displaced and entire areas in ruins. Outside Durban’s Department of Home Affairs, dozens of Congolese nationals remain after similar xenophobic protests forced them from their homes.
