Opinion: Canada is showing it deserves its spot in the World Cup
– Cathal Kelly
World Cups tend to advantage two types of teams. First, traditional powers who feel they can go three-quarter speed until near the end, hoarding their resources for the big fights. Then there are the outsiders who put their foot on the floor from the get-go. Every once in a while, one of those sneaks nearly to the end. Morocco in 2022 and South Korea in 2002 are recent examples. Korea also had the advantage of playing at home.
You’re starting to get the feeling that one of the hosts will make that sort of run. So far, all three have looked better than their most reasonable projections, but none have come further, faster than Canada.

Canada made history with their first men’s World Cup win as Jonathan David delivered a hat-trick and Jesse Marsch’s press overwhelmed Qatar, but Ismael Koné’s serious injury cast a shadow over a dominant night in Vancouver.
VANCOUVER --
The Canadian men’s national team is on the board at the World Cup and played with a confidence like never before, but it wasn’t an overwhelmingly celebratory mood at the end of the 6-0 win in the afternoon at Vancouver’s BC Place.
After a first half that saw Jonathan David silence doubters with a brace and Cyle Larin score his second goal in as many games, the second half saw key midfielder Ismael Koné suffer a serious injury after taking a tackle from behind.
Assim Madibo was sent off for the challenge, putting Qatar down to nine men in the 51st minute after they had already fallen to 10 following Homam Elamin’s dismissal for deny…

Canada secured a historic 6-0 FIFA World Cup victory over Qatar, with Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick. However, the triumph was marred by a post-match confrontation. Tensions flared after a reckless tackle injured Canada's Ismaël Koné, leading to two Qatar red cards and a heated exchange between both teams.

Canada defeated Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver on Thursday to finally record their first-ever victory in Men's World Cup history. Jonathan David was the hero for this massive win. He finally scored his first-ever World Cup goal with a spectacular volley. However, the 26-year-old Juventus star made it even more special by converting it into a hat-trick. This came after a terrible performance that sparked a lot of criticism of the young star.

's Historic Hat-trick
Jonathan David scored a hat-trick for Canada against Qatar, setting a new record during the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage encounter in Vancouver on Thursday. David doubled Les Rouges' lead with a beautiful right-footed volley in the 29th minute, and he doubled his own lead with a tap-in during first-half stoppage time.
He then created history by becoming the first North American player to score a hat-trick in the FIFA World Cup since Bert Patenaude of the United States of America in the tournament's debut year in 1930, with his third goal in stoppage time during the second half.

VANCOUVER — Welcome to life as a footballing nation, Canada. It couldn’t just be a celebration, or even a sort of coronation. It couldn’t just be the high-water mark for a men’s program that had never won at a
World Cup
, and never advanced to knockout games, and now is almost assured to do so.
Canada’s 6-0 demolition of Qatar
at a sold-out BC Place Stadium was all of those things, of course. Canada can now win Group B with just a draw against Switzerland next week, after pushing their goal differential to the top of the group. This was a truly great day in Canadian men’s football: a massive fan march, a fantastic crowd, the prime minister in attendance, the nation watching.
But football will break your heart, too, and that’s what the match became. It was triumphal and gruesome,…

Jonathan David scored a hat-trick as Canada destroyed nine-man Qatar 6-0 to record the nation's long-awaited first victory at a men's World Cup on Thursday.
Qatar finished the game with nine men after having players sent off in either half of the one-sided affair at Vancouver Stadium.
The second red card, shown to Assim Madibo, came after a tackle that left midfielder Ismael Kone with an apparent broken leg. Kone was taken to a local hospital after being stretchered off the pitch.
Canada was leading 3-0 at the time after first-half goals from Cyle Larin and a brace from David, who ended his lengthy goal drought with a thunderous volley and then a close-range strike off a rebound. The Juventus forward - Canada's all-time leading scorer - then capped his historic hat-trick in stoppage time, and is now tied with Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot lead at the 2026 tournament.
Nathan Saliba, who replaced Kone after his serious injury, scored a free-kick shortly after entering the contest and celebrated by ho…

Canada's Jonathan David Scores World Cup Hat Trick
Jonathan David stole the spotlight with a hat trick as
Canada
defeated Qatar 6-0 at Vancouver Stadium. The win was historic for Canada, as it marked the nation’s first-ever win at a
World Cup
.
David entered the match with a lot of pressure on his shoulders. He faced criticism for his performance in Canada’s Group B opener against
Bosnia and Herzegovina
last Friday. That match saw him be subbed off, with many supporters voicing frustration on social media.
Some supporters even suggested that head coach Jesse Marsch remove the
Juventus
striker from the starting-XI.
Qatar was reduced to nine men after two players were sent off. Canada was not satisfied and kept pushing the pace offensively. That was evident with how David found the back of the net.
With the hat trick, David became the
first CONCACAF player to register a hat trick
in a World Cup match s…

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Jonathan David scored
three goals
and Canada won its first
World Cup
match while all but securing a spot in the knockout round with a 6-0 victory over Qatar on Thursday.
Qatar was reduced to nine players because of red cards in the chaotic match. Assim Madibo was handed a red early in the second half after a tackle on Ismaël Koné, who
was stretchered off with a broken left leg.
Homan Ahmed was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan.
With the outburst of scoring, Canada tripled its overall World Cup goal total. Cyle Larin scored in the Canadians’
opening draw
against Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Alphonso Davies scored four years ago in a loss to Croatia in Qatar, where Cana…
