KYIV -- Thousands of activists have marched in Ukraine's capital, marking an annual celebration of gay and lesbian rights that has been marred by violence in the past.
The June 17 March of Equality in Kyiv, which took place amid an increased police presence, was one of the largest such eventsstaged in Ukraine in years.
Clashes broke out early in the morning when riot police dispersed more than 150 far-right protesters seeking to block off the route of the march, police said in a statement.
But no serious incidents occurred during the march, and Kyiv police chief Andriy Krischenko said 57 members of radical groups were detained.

This year’s Equality March took place under the slogan ‘Our families are part of Ukraine’. Participants in the march called on the Verkhovna Rada to take the rights of LGBTIQ+ people into account in legislation. In particular, they opposed provisions in the new Civil Code which define the family exclusively as a union between a man and a woman. Among those taking part in the march were representatives of civil society organisations, activists and members of the armed forces.
One of the servicemen, with the call sign ‘Psikh’, explained that he supports the option to formalise relationships.
“I want to register a partnership with him and call him my husband — not just my husband, but I need there to be a legal document too,” he said.
Traffic restrictions were in place in the capital’s city centre due to the mass events. Law enforcement officers separated the participants of the different events: KyivPride took place near Taras Shevchenko Park, whilst supporters of the traditional family gathered on Khreshchatyk. Participants in the ‘March of Tradition’ stated that they were de…

Kyiv will host the 10 annual KyivPride march on June 21, with
organizers pushing for legal recognition of
LGBTQ+
families.
Organizers said the issue has become critical for many
during the full-scale war and that the march aims to press for equal rights
regardless of whom people love or who they are.
They said holding the march now is crucial because the
Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) is considering a new Civil Code that, in
their view, would enshrine new forms of discrimination. This year’s slogan is
"Our families are part of Ukraine."

"Same-sex couples in Ukraine can be together for years,
share property and bank accounts and go on vacation, and still not have state
protection,” said KyivPride chair Anna Sharyhina.
“If someone dies on the front line, their partner is legally
nothing. The new Civil Code could fix this, but instead it cements inequality
and pushes us away from the European Union, which we seek. We are marching to
say: our families are part of Ukraine, and it’s time for the state to recognize
that.”
KyivPride will present four demands to authorities:
Do not pass the new Civil Code b…
