The powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani on June 8 has dramatically altered portions of Mindanao’s southern coastline, with government scientists confirming a significant coastal uplift that raised sections of the seabed by as much as two meters and pushed the shoreline hundreds of meters seaward.
The geological transformation, observed in parts of Glan, Sarangani Province, and extending to areas of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, has exposed vast stretches of coral reefs and seagrass beds that were previously submerged beneath seawater, raising concerns over ecological damage and long-term impacts on coastal communities.
Initial reports from residents in Glan emerged on June 10, when locals noticed that sea levels remained unusually low and had not returned to their normal state days after the earthquake. The unusual phenomenon prompted the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Glan to conduct ground v…

A7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on Monday, killing at least 14 people, with 7 others missing, buildings across General Santos city, and triggering tsunami warnings across six countries.
As many as 138 aftershocks followed within hours, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered immediate coastal evacuations on what was to have been the first day of the school year.
The quake struck one of the Philippines' most populated southern cities during peak morning hours on a school day, with videos showing buildings collapsing, students screaming, and teachers sheltering children.
Earthquake-triggered tsunami warnings were issued from Indonesia and Japan to Papua New Guinea and Australia, though most alerts have since been lifted or downgraded.
The Philippine disaster agency confirms 14 dead and 5 injured following the quake, which struck just offshore ofMindanao island's Sarangani province at 7:37 a.m. local time (11:37 p.m. GMT).

MANILA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 32 people were killed, numerous building damaged, and schools and flights were suspended after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Sarangani province in the southern Philippines on Monday morning, according to local authorities. Multiple countries had issued tsunami warnings, which were later lifted.
Junie Castillo, spokesperson for the Philippines' Office of Civil Defense, said 10 victims were reported in South Cotabato's General Santos, a port city with a population of over 700,000, and at least 12 people remain missing so far. The deaths were caused by falling debris, building collapse and landslides. The Philippine National Police earlier said that no fewer than 134 people were injured.
A two-storey school building in General Santos collapsed with students trapped inside, and authorities said they are verifying details of the incident. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — An offshore magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the southern Philippines Monday, killing at least 19 people, injuring more than 200 others mostly in damaged buildings and sending a 1-meter (3-foot) tsunami into nearby coasts.
A few buildings collapsed and key infrastructure sustained quake damage in the city of General Santos, and tsunami damage was reported in at least one coastal village. Smaller waves were measured in Indonesia and Palau and as far away as southern Japan.
“It’s a major earthquake,” Teresito Bacolcol, the director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said, warning people to seek advise before returning to damaged buildings and houses which could collapse due to aftershocks.
“Our pickup truck suddenly jerked and I thought we had a flat tire,” said Rod Sosmeña, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense, told The Associated Press from the hard-hit port city of General Santos, where he was traveling when the quake struck at 7:37 a.m.

Manila, Philippines —
At least 17 people were killed in a southern Philippine province Monday mostly due to a landslide set off by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, bringing the overall death toll wrought by the quake in the region to 32, officials said.
Rene Punzalan, a disaster-mitigation official of Sarangani province told the DZBB radio network that 13 villagers were killed when a landslide set off by the earthquake hit houses in the mountainous town of Glan. Four other villagers died in Sarangani for still-unclear unclear reasons, he said.
The newly reported casualties raised the overall death toll in the strongest earthquake to hit the Philippine archipelago this year to at least 32. The quake caused small buildings to collapse and sparked small tsunamis in the southern Philippines and smaller waves that were detected in Indonesia and Palau and as far away as southern Japan.

TACLOBAN, Philippines — Mobs overran a rice warehouse on the island worst hit by the Philippine typhoon, setting off a wall collapse that killed eight people and carting off thousands of sacks of the grain, while security forces Wednesday exchanged gunfire with an armed gang.
The incidents in or close to the storm-ravaged city hosting international relief efforts add to concerns about the slow pace of aid distribution and that parts of the disaster zone are descending into chaos.
Five long days after Typhoon Haiyan wasted the eastern seaboard of the Philippines, the cogs of what promises to be a massive international aid effort are beginning to turn, but not quickly enough for…

MANILA, Philippines — For more than two decades, storms and floods have consistently battered the Philippines, making up nearly two-thirds of all recorded disasters from 2000 to 2024.
Data from the International Disaster Database (EM-DAT) shows the country was struck by 201 storms and 109 floods over the 24-year period — far outnumbering earthquakes (25), volcanic activity (18), and epidemics (11).

2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami
The 2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami were catastrophic events that struck the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia on September 28, 2018. Triggered by movement along the Palu-Koro fault, the disaster began with a magnitude 6.1 earthquake, followed by a more powerful 7.5 magnitude quake just hours later. The series of seismic events, coupled with the unique geography of Palu Bay, resulted in unexpected and devastating tsunami waves reaching heights of 18 to 20 feet. The tsunami caught many residents off guard, especially as communication infrastructure had already been significantly disrupted by the earthquake.
The city of Palu and surrounding areas faced severe destruction, leading to thousands of fatalities and injuries. As of May 2019, the death toll was estimated at over 4,340, with many victims unaccounted for. The disaster's impact was exacerbated by challenges in rescue and relief efforts, including a lack of heavy equipment and inadequate early-warning systems. By February 2019, some survivors were still living in emergency shelt…

Massive earthquake of 6.7 magnitude hits Indonesia's Palu on Sulawesi ...
Sulawesi Island:In a significant global development, a massive earthquake of 6.7 magnitude has hit Indonesia’s Palu on Sulawesi Island. As per country’s geophysics agency BMKG, the epicenter of the earthquake is located around 42 km southeast of Palu at a depth of 10 km. The earthquake, which struck at a relatively shallow depth, sent shockwaves through Central Sulawesi and forced terrified residents to flee their homes in a region still deeply scarred by past seismic disasters. Emergency response teams and local authorities immediately began conducting damage assessments across Palu and neighboring districts to check for structural collapses and casualties.

After a 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rattled the Philippines, We Awoke ...
The Philippines is located in the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Recently, Mindanao – the country’s second-largest island – was hit by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake which caused significant damage and trauma. Despite a tsunami warning, there were limited human casualties, although homes and infrastructure suffered heavily. The country faces the threat of “The Big One,” a potential, massive earthquake that could potentially strike the Philippines with devastating consequences, especially given the historical context of earthquakes that have occurred in the archipelago.
—
The Philippines is no stranger to natural disasters, given its status as one of the most “disaster-prone” countries in the world. We are routinely afflicted by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as we are situated on the western edge of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area particularly prone to these kinds of disasters. The country also sees an average of 22 tropical cyclones entering its Area of Responsibility every year and, among these, about six or seven result in significant damage and do…
