South Korea's Supreme Court has upheld a seven-year prison sentence handed down to former president Yoon Suk-yeol for obstructing authorities' attempts to arrest him over his short-lived imposition of martial law in 2024.
The ruling came after the Seoul High Court in April increased his prison sentence to seven years from five after finding Yoon guilty of additional charges.
There was no misunderstanding of any legal interpretations in the previous court's ruling, the Supreme Court said on Thursday.
The Supreme Court upheld the appeals court's finding that Yoon was also guilty of fabricating documents and failing to follow the legal process required to impose martial law, which has to be discussed at a formal cabinet meeting, as well as spreading false information to foreign media outlets.
After the ruling, Yoon's lawyers said they would seek a ruling from the Constitutional Court following Thursday's decision.
"We will challenge the constitutionality of this ruling through constitutional review procedures, including a constitutional complaint," a lawyer for Yoon said.
Prosecutors, who had sought a 10-year prison term in the case, accused Yoon of abusing his p…

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A former South Korean justice minister was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Monday after a court found him guilty of helping ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol carry out his brief declaration of martial law in 2024.
The Seoul Central District Court said it was clear Park Sung-jae played a key role in Yoon’s attempted power grab following the declaration of martial law on Dec. 3, 2024, including ordering ministry officials to assess detention capacities at correctional facilities to prepare for arrests of politicians.
Park also instructed officials to consider sending prosecutors to Yoon’s martial law command to support possible investigations into the former conservative leader’s political opponents and his unsubstantiated claims about liberal-ledelection fraud.Park also ordered immigration authorities to be prepared to impose travel bans, the court said.

An appeals court on Tuesday sentenced former Korean first lady Kim Keon-hee to four years in prison on corruption charges.
The Seoul High Court found Kim guilty of involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme and other charges, sentencing her to four years in prison, a fine of 50 million won, and ordering the forfeiture of around 20 million won.
Kim, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, had been indicted on charges of participating in a scheme to manipulate the stock price of Deutsch Motors between 2010 and 2012, conspiring with a shaman between April and July 2022 to receive money and valuables from the Unification Church in exchange for favors involving the religious organization, and receiving free opinion polling services from Myung Tae-kyun between June 2021 and March 2022 while interfering in candidate nominations for the People Power Party.
Both Kim and the special counsel team that had indicted her had appealed the lower court’s sentence of 20 months.

Former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Monday in connection with former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed martial law attempt in 2024.
The Seoul Central District Court found Park guilty of ordering Justice Ministry officials to review plans to dispatch prosecutors to a joint investigation headquarters and inspect correctional facilities after Yoon declared martial law.
Park was also found guilty of drafting a document justifying Yoon’s martial law declaration after the National Assembly voted to lift it.
However, the court dismissed a separate charge that Park improperly responded to inquiries from former first lady Kim Keon Hee after an investigation in May 2025 into her alleged receipt of a luxury handbag.
The special counsel had accused Park of receiving questions from Kim about the investigation and instructing ministry officials to check related matters, but the court ruled that the allegation fell outside the scope of the special counsel’s mandate.
The court also dismissed charges against former Government Legislation Minister Le…

Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun was sentenced to a three-year prison term Tuesday for deceiving the Presidential Security Service into issuing a secure phone for use following former President Yoon Suk Yeol's imposition of martial law.
The Seoul Central District Court handed down the sentence after convicting Kim of obstruction of official duties by deception for obtaining the phone on Dec. 2, 2024, a day before Yoon's martial law declaration, and handing it to Noh Sang-won, a civilian and a former commander of the Defense Intelligence Command.
Noh then used the phone as chief of an investigation team set up to look into election fraud allegations under Yoon's martial law, the court said.
Kim was also found guilty of instigating the destruction of evidence by ordering his aide to get rid of all martial law-related documents on Dec. 5, 2024, a day after the decree was lifted through a vote by the National Asse…
