ASpanish court has ordered Begona Gomez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, to stand trial by jury on corruption-related charges and barred her from leaving the country, according to a court order released Saturday.
Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered Gomez to surrender her passport and appear before the court twice a month until a verdict is reached.
The ruling also instructed authorities to enforce the travel ban.
"The necessary instructions shall be issued to all border posts and civilian and military airports" to ensure Gomez does not leave Spain, the court said.
No date has yet been set for the trial.
Peinado formally charged Gomez in April with embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of funds.
The investigation, launched in April 2024, seeks to determine whether Gomez used her position as the prime minister's wife to obtain private benefits, allegations she and Sanchez have repeatedly denied.
The case focuses on the creation and management of a chair at Madrid's Complutense University that Gomez co-directed, as well as allegations that public r…

A Madrid judge has opened a criminal trial against Begoña Gómez, wife of the Prime Minister. Her passport has been withdrawn and she is barred from leaving Spain. The decision follows demands from far-right groups and marks a rare step in Spanish democracy.
Begoña Gómez, wife of Spain's Prime Minister, now faces a criminal trial after Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered her passport withdrawn and banned her from leaving the country. The decision, announced Saturday, follows repeated requests from far-right groups acting as popular prosecutors, including Hazte Oír and Vox. This measure, rarely seen in Spain's recent democratic history, comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the case.
The court's move marks a significant escalation in the legal proceedings that began in 2024. Judge Peinado had previously rejected similar requests to restrict Gómez's movements, notably ahead of her planned trip to the G-20 summit in Brazil. At that time, he argued that such restrictions were unnecessary and disproportionate, noting the investigation was still in its early stages and that Gómez's personal circumstan…
